Want to thank you guys for taking the time to read my post. My girlfriend and I will be traveling to Aruba and staying at the Divi All Inclusive this Saturday. We have a flight out of JFK and will arrive at noon on Saturday. Should we be worried about Hurricane Dean, will it affect our flight? It shows that it will pass over the island, but I wanted to get your thoughts. Thanks! How have hurricanes that pass above Aruba actually affected the weather there?
We were in Aruba 2 years ago when the hurricane that wiped out New Orleans started. The winds in Aruba died out & it was humid. Aruba needs it's tradewinds to keep the humidity down. As long as your on the beach, it's no problem, just jump in the ocean to cool off.
As for the flight, I'm sure they will be routed around it.
Currently the Eye of the storm should be well to the North of the island on Saturday. The storm itself won't come near the island but it may experience some rain and surf from the storm.
There is a possibilty that your flight could be affected, however. According to NOAA, DEAN should be just South of the Dominican Republic by 2:00pn on Saturday and most flight from the US to Aruba fly over the DR.
3 years ago (sept 2004) our aruba flight was the first commercial flight from usa to arrive in aruba after "ivan".
unsure of ivan's path then, but flights were cancelled for about 20 hours and aruba really got really wet. incredibly wet. there were floods and many folks lost their homes (80, i think)
on the street to Madam Janettes (the one where the ball park is on the right) that road was partially flooded and we saw dead chickens floating.
MJs was closed for 3 days due to water.
downtown was DEEP with water.
amsterdam manor parking...........the water was up over the tires and pouring into rental cars
the eagle section................tons of flooding on the streets
take any hurricane threat seriously.
even though aruba hasn't (by the grace of god) had a direct hit in decades................it still gets backlashed with torrents of rain if the storm is close enough.
keep a good eye on the NOAA site
keep your airlines phone # handy
please keep us posted and we'll all be optimistic that dean moves away fast and dies without hurting anyone or anything.

Right now it appears the Meteorological service of the Netherlands Antilles & Aruba (MDNA&A) is concerned about the SSS islands: Saba, St. Eustatuis, St. Maarten. They are predicting a passage of the storm 200 miles to the south of St Martin on Friday at 2 pm
Next advisory from them is at 8 a.m. Thursday or at such a time advisories for a tropical storm come into effect.
Imho, your worries will be for some very very hot days in Aruba with no wind. The best solutions: a float, someone you love, and something nice and cold to drink. This gal prefers a Bright but will never say no to a Balashi!
Enjoy your trip MichaelK2 and make sure you come back here and tell us all about it.
Just concerned with getting off the ground at this point. After thorough research (I am a bit of a nut) it seems Aruba will be okay, and others on the board seem to have the same opinion. Now just have to see if Jetblue goes there with a hurricane not too far away!
