QUOTE=Retagger;226416]I had Verizon "Unlock" my iPhone 4s so that I could use an international sim card. What you have to buy is a sim card cutter (I bought one via Amazon.com), and cut the sim card either from either Digicel or Setar. It is a very easy process to cut the card. Mine works fine in Aruba. I have also used local sim cards in Spain, Italy and Portugal and they all work with the iPhone 4s.

Lightbulb The way dh & I understand it...

Under Setar, with 3 G you can use the SIM card for calling to anywhere from anywhere on the island and use at a wi-fi hotspot for data http://www.wifi-aruba.com/ on your smart phone. For data make sure you are logged into the wi-fi hotspot and not using data roaming on the phone.

    OR

If a smart phone is 4g capable. http://setar.aw/visitors/4g-information.html you will have the capability of calling as stated above and connecting anywhere on the island, but do be aware that Setar has "fair use policy". Under the fup, you will have unlimited data usage, but decreased speed after the specified limit is reached. Only difference being on the monthly plan you are limited to 8 GB of data and a fup of 3 GB.

Positive: 3 G sim card will give you unlimited data via wi-fi hotspots
Negative: Connectivity for data limited to wi-fi hotspots

Positive: 4 G sim card will give you connectivity anywhere on the island
Negative: Under "fair use policy" for speed and data use will be restricted

Charles will correct me if I am wrong, and rightfully so, if he has better advice.

Thanks all - didnt know the 3g / wifi thing. Very interesting. Somewhat defeats the purpose of having 3g - if I need to connect to a wifi hotspot.

I will email them direct and see what I come up with.

I miss the days I could go on vacation and not bring a phone / internet. Life has gotten simpler, yet more complicated at the same time because of technology.

The way dh and I understood it was that if you have 3G AND the hotspot you would have unlimited data with no worries about being throttling down on the broadband.

    OK -

    Just finished with Verizon...

    Here it is....

    1) Verizon will unlock your 4S for you if you call Global Support
    2) Once it is unlocked - you can get a Setar/Digicel sim card and slip it in (may have to cut the card if they dont have micro) I ordered the cutter just in case
    3) Once the card is in - I will get a warning that my phone is locked.
    4) I need to plug into a computer with internet, with itunes and sync - this will complete my unlock
    5) Now I should be on Digicel/Setar and depending on what I buy - have an Aruban #, and an unlimited 3g internet plan. iPhone 4S is NOT 4g

I will let everyone know how it goes in 2 weeks.

That is a good deal. The more I thought about it, the 4G is a rip anyway having to worry about how much data you are burning through.

with AT&T i just bought the int data plan for 29.95 for a month and didn't worry where i was using the iphone..this way i didn't have to find a wifi spot or whatever..they might even prorate the fee for the time your are there..say 1 week or 2 weeks..much easier..

Card cutter worked - I have a worldwide sim I am using to test. My VZ phone is now picking up an AT&T signal. I should be fine when I get to Aruba.

AT&T is great with international - thats your best bet - if you are with Verizon it is much more expensive.
