Re: Looking to research WIND POWER
Tony,
Sure do know something about it. Not on a sophisticated level, however on a practical level (somewhat historic) I can give you some information.
As kids, we would drive through the country sides of Aruba which are commonly called the Cunucu. I distinctly remember that most of the cunucu houses had wind mills. Granted they weren't the massive ones but instead rather flimsy towers with the double bladed props at the top with the large "fan" looking tail that kept them staring into the delicious Aruba wind. From what I understand, they were used to produce low watt current and to pump water from cycterns or shallow wells. That is second hand info and I cannot swear on it being correct.
There were a very few wind mills in the town ship of Oranjestad, however I have seen some of the older (very old) pictures that show them here and there.
the next time I became aware of them is that the ELMAR office, downtown, had one massive one with only a half propeller. Never saw it work. It seemed to be more of a monument to idiotic spending. In any event, I asked about it once and was told that it was a part of an experiment for wind power. (Would love to know who the team manager of the experiment was)
From time to time you hear discussion on the validity of wind power on Aruba. I for one am a believer in it. There is a German gentleman living on the island that has done some research on it and he feels that the towers should be placed in the ocean (North coast) instead of on land.
If I am able to find out anything else, I will post it for you
OK?
Charles
