My husband tore his quad about 10 yrs. ago while on vacation. The was an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Francis who shared his time between the island hospitals. While we chose to return home for surgery, the surgery Dr. Francis recommended was the exact surgery he had in NY. I am sure the hospital would have contacts for the surgeon,.

Othopedic Surgeon in Aruba
I had knee replacement surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City the beginning of July. People come from all over to New York to have their surgery at this hospital. My surgery ended up with come complications even though I had my surgery at one of the top rated hospitals in the USA. My concern for you is that othopedic surgery is very expensive and am sure if you have usa health insurance it will not be covered outside the united states. Also, if you have othopedic surgery in Aruba while on vacation, how can you enjoy your vacation if you can't even go in the water?

There is an Orthopedic group on the road that ends at The Alhambra. I can't find my paperwork but I went there for follow up after breaking my wrist. I thought they were very good and I when I got back home my Dr. agreed with everything they had to say.

even travel insurance will not "kick in and pay" while in aruba.
it is all about paying upfront and then "being reimbursed once home". folks visiting a foreign country should ALWAYS have a credit card. one never knows when one needs to charge something MAJOR. At LaCabana a few days ago was a gentleman in a wheelchair that fell disembarking a flight from bonaire and broke a few bones in his foot and his large toe (he had 1 week bonaire and 1 week aruba) he had surgery on the foot, spent an overnight in the hospital and was wheeling around lacabana after a day of being released from hospital. he told paul that his whole bill including surgery and all other fees was under $2000. He had all of his paperwork translated to English so that he could submit to his own carrier once home. his wife was the one that was having "not so good a time". he,seemed quite content. he was running her ragged. she and i joked together and i told her i had a car and if she wanted to escape i would be glad to take her wherever she wanted. she laughed. anyway, he never went in the water either pool or ocean and he seemed to be having an ok time. also too, saw a person, quadraplegic on a vent, that was enjoying himself sitting in the shade and watching the sites. he really looked content and like he was having fun. one does not have to be able to be in the water to be having a good time on aruba...........imo. glad to hear you are on the road to recovery karen. keep up the hard work in therapy! Thanks so very much for your replies. I went with a Dr. Haime. He was pretty good. I'm recuperating in Aruba because we have a condo here, so there was no need to rush back to the U.S. since I'm retired. Fortunately, I'm insured with Aetna Global and they sent a guarantee letter to the hospital so I was only required to pay my portion. Thank God! It was very expensive!

I have been following this thread with interest.
I have been told that I will have to have my right knee done in the near future and have to decide to have it done in the early Fall and recuperate in Aruba or done in the Spring and not be able to drive my Corvette. Hmmmmmm....... Decisions!!!! |
