odd complaints on tripadvisor

I was on tripadvisor the other day, and a couple people said they had experienced a bad smell at the beach on palm beach - like sulphur. Do you know what they are talking about? Is that something that happens often? I have been there twice, and have never noticed anything unpleasant - indeed quite the contrary!

during the past there have been occasional complaints up at the marriott section of palm beach.
there had been issues there with rotting seaweed and other issues.....marriott has been working very diligently on rectifying the situation. i have not heard of a complaint in many months. i thought that it was now fine. maybe randi or kent can comment as they have been in that area very recently.

I don't recall how long it has been, but probably within the last year. Sounds like it is taken care of, so thats great news.

the smell shouldn't be there anymore. it occurred after the crazy hurricane season in 2007-2008 or so. the seaweed and resulting muck rotted on the shoreline. the hotels called in the cleaning specialists and sweeped all of it away.

We occasionally get that smell at some of our South facing beaches here on the Cape during the Summer as well.

One can make this occur.... Take your heel and drive it into the sand floor about 20' out from the beach... The sulfur like smell is trapped under what appears to be 6" of sand (rotting debris/seeweed). Add this to the list of things to do after your 8th or 9th Balashi or Amstel Bright!! ;o)

Bottom line, we have been there (2) times in the past (2) years and it is not that big of a deal. Going back in June and overlook such little things when surrounded by sun, sand and cool drinks!

report right from the "beach"

Don't worry, the issue of the smell was dealt with a few years ago and there is no smell anymore!

Having said that, if there is a storm and sea weed blows in you will get a smell of rotting sea weed for a day or so until it is all cleaned up. They are very good about that and works quickly to get rid of the sea weed.

It seems like they have had this issue on and off since they re-did the
fisherman's pier. Perhaps with all the rough seas we have been
experiencing, the seaweed is back.

Sea weed is all gone again, it just takes 2 or 3 days and it clears up. Marriott does a good job in cleaning the beach quickly.
