OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

We decided to go to the beach last sunday and were looking for a special place to go. As you can imagine, living on an island this small allows you to see everything in a relatively short time. Once this happens you have to look for the niches within those places you have already visited and try to make something out of it. We did just that, however I should add that you would need a 4-w-d vehicle to pull this one off, and as I understand it, this is something that many tourists get. So here it is.

We already had the massive large beach towels in the car and lots of bottled water and some snacks that do not leave litter. With this we decided to go to "Baby Beach" but as we reached the anchor at the colony entrance we looked at each other and took a left instead of a right. Off we went to the area where there are massive dunes right on the sea. This is only about one mile (max) from the turn. We drove right up onto the sand and then my wife got the idea to make a little tent so we took the massive towels and tucked them into the windows then rolled the windows up tight to hold the towels. Some sticks we found on the beach served as posts for the other segmets of the towels and under that we set up temporary camp and LOVED IT!!!!

Bottled water served as our champagne and REO cookies and juice did the trick for Junior.

When we wanted sun, we went out and walked the shore. When we wanted shade, we stayed under the recently constructed tent (of sorts) and watched the wind go by. I say watched the wind because you could see little drifts of sand puffing around. NICE STUFF! When it was time to go we just rolled down the windows and cleaned up after ourselves and made sure that it was as we found it and then went on our way.

That is not the end of our adventure. Instead of taking the same road back, we continued down the North coast and went beyond the Fontien Area and found this nice Bar located in the middle of nowhere. Went in and checked to see if the beers were cold (they were) and had a burger to accompany the beer. While doing this you have a great view of the ocean. Prices were great. Junior played in the makeshift and lovely playground area and hunted lizards and other creatures - NO luck.

The drive home went through the interior of the island and was a nice change to say the least.

Rough roads? = none
Get lost factor? = minimal to non existing
Simple fun? = You bet
Memorable? = Leave it up to you.

Thought I would share.

Re: OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

Charles,

There you go! That is exactly what I can imagine doing if I lived there. Do you thank God everyday you live on Aruba?

If you get bored down there remember- fall colors are coming to the NE US and are something to behold. I gladly house swap with you for a few days, I'll even throw in a few choice beers and wines, how about it?

Re: OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

Charles,
Is the bar you mentioned the one at the North East side of the National Park? We found it last year and really enjoyed our time there, the staff was very friendly, had a lot of laughs with them too! Your right about the beer being cold and the burgers good, this snack bar is an Oasis. If your in the area you must stop by. Sure it's a little breezy and you must control your napkins but that's part of the fun of it all.

SUDS = RE: house swap = Thanks for the offer but NAAAHHH.

MIKE & MARY = Re: bar. = Just keep driving down the ocean side road and you will see it to your left directly after passing Fontien. Trust me, it is there.

Be well all.

Re: OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

Charles,

i envy you that you don't have to drive for several hours to get to the sea.
i was brought up by the sea. when i was young we had our own boat. so every summer we went out on the sea. we lived on the westcoast of sweden. there we have several small islands that we visited. we sailed for about two ore sometimes three weeks and i loved it.
i really miss that. now i have to drive for about an hour to get to the sea. but whenever i do so i enjoy every second of it.i love the salty air and the softness of the sand. that i will get plenty of when i return to Aruba.
LOVELY! can't wait.......yes i can)) and this time we will explore the island some more but we want to save some places for our next visit.(already planing for 2006).

thank you for your lovely storie as usual i read your storie with a BIG smile on my lips.

greetings from sweden
Tina

Re: OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

Once again I enjoyed one of your stories. You just made me want Feb., to come faster. I still have the Fall and 3 months of Winter before I get to my home away from home. My husband tells me that I rush my life away just tinking about when I can get back to Aruba.
Thanks.

That little bar has great pina coladas, too! We swim at Boca Grandi lots when we are in Aruba, as it has some waves to play in.

Re: OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

Is this the little place called "Boca Prins"
near the sand dunes? We go there every year and it is my favorate place to visit. Small but delightful. It took us a few years to discover it but was worth the wait. It took a while to get to the natural pool.We can discover something every visit.
