Jeez... $9.21 per hour?!? That's awful. Glad I always tip. And, think about it: they're touching your personal items!! Tip if just for that reason!!!
I saw that. And on my Xfinity home page today I saw about tipping also. How can people not know to tip the housekeeper. What's a $1. a day. Nothing.
We always ask the first morning if she will be doing our room all week. If not we tip her the last day she is on and do the same with each person. We are very laid back travelers and often tell them to take a day off only leave new towels. We tip $5 a day if we can afford a nice vacation we can afford to tip accordingly.
We have the option at DV to either have the cleaning staff clean our room everyday or just change towels everyday and do their regular cleaning on Thursday. I choose to have them only change our towels, figure they do enough cleaning in other rooms. And of course since I am so ADD, i keep the place pretty spiffy anyway.
But we always tip at the end of the week regardless.
When at a hotel for work I usually leave a $2-3 on the nightstand each night .....
ARUBA....HOME AWAY FROM HOME
I wonder what the maids get paid at the resorts on Aruba. Probably less. ABC and Costa Linda have an envelope in the room with the maids name on it. We have been leaving $50 a week the last few trips as there were 3 of us in the room all week. I usually tip $2 a day per person at hotels in the U S. The maids at the ABC and Costa Linda do a lot more work than most hotel staff in the U S. The rooms are 2 bedroom at CL and they mop the floors every day.

We generally do 4-5 per day.... and felt really guilty on the day we forgot to leave anything. Those house keeping folks work hard at a tough job!
if you are traveling with kids.............a way that we got our son to "not be a slob" in the lacabana or other resort rooms. we got him where it hurst, his wallet!
his hard earned paper route spending $$. if he was a slob and a pig, we insisted he contribute toward the housekeeping tip. boy, did he wise up fast!
as he got older, a teen, we required him whether he was a slob or not, to contribute to the tip of housekeeping.
