Hotel safe is the perfect place to keep them.
We used to keep a photocopy elsewhere either in our luggage or computer laptop bag or other. Then we resorted to saving a copy in our email in box. This year, dh just kept the copies on his smart phone. You should only need I.D. on the island for renting a car which would be a drivers license. U.S. drivers licenses are perfectly acceptable.

aside from the photo copies of my passport and license, like lisa's dh, i keep photos of them on my iphone

I was once advised while walking down a quiet street in Dublin to never carry my passport on me once at my destination...because you never know what could happen. That was easily about 10 years ago and every time I pick up my passport for a trip I remember that kind policeman's warning.
