Oh, wow ~ great!! Thanks everyone! So, probably our best bet would be for him to bring his laptop, and then get just a basic phone for staying in touch with my dad and the kids at home ~ also, I noticed on the fast phones website it said that there is no charge for
incoming calls ~ which is another plus !

I have a Blackberry with A.T.&T. service. I needed to be able to email and text for work, and make a few daily calls while we were there last Feb. I got an international plan with A.T. & T. that was quite cheap, something like $25.00 for unlimited emails, texts, and a limited number of phone calls. Then they actually pro-rated it for the time I needed it so it ended up being even cheaper. I called them before we went to let them know the date I needed it to start, then I called them when we got back to the states to take it off.

there is no charge to you for the incoming calls.....
BUT, there is the usual charge to those that are making the call to the aruba cell from the USA. (an international call)

My wife and I have been to Aruba for 17 years and last year we used Google Talk on my netbook computer. It literally cost me nothing to phone home for the three weeks we were there ! You do need internet access but phone calls are literally free. I bought $ 10 worth of time and used about $2.00 calling home every day. If you you have a laptop, I would highly recommend it.

Congrats on 20 years! We just spent our 25 there a week ago and had a blast!

I rented from Trees at Aruba Discount Cell. It was perfect, got 90 minutes for $50. Just enough to call home and check in every day. I used the hotel phone to make local calls for reservations and such (only .25) and we didn't need a phone for anything else. Trees was great, came right to the hotel and dropped off the phone and on our way out we met her at another drop off location because we were going right by it. She would have come to us though.

Thanks everybody, so much appreciated ~ Andrea, I am so glad you reminded me about the call charge from US using the land line at home or cell ~ pretty steep ~ I probably wouldn't have thought about it until it was too late ! Thanks
zamboniguy ~ "google talk" ~ didn't really know about that ~ will def check into that too. All such helpful advice!
pbumbaca ~ Happy 25th!! My friend was there last week too and loved it. Just a question about the phone ~ did you find 90minutes too much time (or just enough??) Only because I see one through that same company that offers 50min I beleive for $38.00 ~ do you think that is enough time for a week?? (or does the minutes go by pretty fast??)
Could you text as well? I am wondering if there are charges for that
    Thanks so much!

My wife and I have used googletalk to talk to home ( USA ) last year - costs next to nothing ... I contacted home almost everyday for three weeks and paid about two dollars. You do need internet access but calls are just about free. All you need is a netbook or laptop computer and the rest is simple. Just contact Googletalk and invest $10 and you'll have it for years with spare change !
Hope it works for you as well as it did for us.

Sorry for the late reply! I've been a bit busy at with no time for fun online! We did not use all 90 minutes. I did not even try texting as I was worried it was not included. Thanks for the anniversary wishes! Have a great trip!
