    Problem !!!

I am all set to book our 2nd trip to Aruba, but now my dear husband has informed me that "maybe we should try a new place"!!!! He is thinking either Barbados, or get this, Vegas!!!!! Has anyone been to Barbados? Can you give me a comparison? I have been dreaming of returning to Aruba since before I left!
    HELP!!!

vegas.........no comparison. apples vs concrete blocks

barbados....stopped there on a cruise 2x, very very very poor and discomfort level was high when walking around the downtown port area. lovely beaches.
we were depressed and sad to see such poverty.

    again, no comparison imo

i think that lisa and family have been there on cruises as well. she may have something different to say.

I spent two weeks in barbados. it is nice but as andrea said, very poor unless you're staying at an inclusive 5 star which my theory is "what's the point of going". It is no comparison to aruba. I would NEVER just walk around in barbados by myself and definitely not at nite. i bop around aruba by myself at nite without even the slightest discomfort.

so to answer your question, there is NO comparison. As I said, been to barbados for two weeks, don't need to ever go again...

...and the beaches on the windward coast are rough. Beaches on the leeward side are beautiful white sand like Aruba , but for comfort you will be paying $$$.

ALSO, what time of year are you talking??? Hurricane season runs June 1 - November 30...Greater chance of hurricane in Barbados than Aruba.

Las Vegas, never been, but can say it would certainly be different from a "beach vacation" unless you go to Aruba and enjoy sitting around the pool. If that were the case, a swimming pool is a swimming pool regardless where it is , as long as it is warm enough to swim

LOL, if he does not want to go to Aruba and you do not want to go to Vegas, why not compromise and take a Caribbean cruise which stops in Barbados as well as some other islands. This way your dh can get a feel for what the other islands are like.
What about a Cruise for next year?
    Cruises

Some more food for thought Is there anywhere THIS good?

I don't know what he's thinking! We will vacation in October, and I am really pushing for the return trip to Aruba (I'm sure I'll win!) As I explained to him, this time it will be even more relaxing because we already have a 'feel' for the Island, and we don't have to do all the souvineers this time. Also, as I explained to him, we could probably do a Vegas trip pretty cheap at some point. We did a cruise to Alaska before, and really enjoyed it, but don't like the feeling of being 'stuck' on the ship all the time. Thanks!

Barbados was pretty - was definitely a bit more "harassed" by people in the street in comparison to Aruba. I am all for trying new places and getting some new experiences - so it may not be a bad idea if you get a good deal. I never felt unsafe - just noticed more people bothering me.

Vegas - its a different league of a trip. I adore vegas - but it is a far cry from an Island vacation. I guess you could stay at Mandalay Bay - and sit on the sand by the wave pool and pretend to be on a beach in Aruba! Vegas to me is all about eating at high priced restaurants, getting dressed up and going to the club, gambling until 5am.

And while I can do similar things in Aruba - I tend to be a lot more laid back in Aruba. I wear flip-flops to dinner. I will go to senor frogs and dance a bit and then do the casino. But I am always asleep by 2am - I dont have the urge to party all night like I do in Vegas. But I have kids now... so maybe that has all changed!

    Good luck!

Vegas, I've been there about 40 times (friends live there). if you go in october, they usually close the pools around the end of october in vegas. it is still hot but for some reason they start closing the hotel pools (more towards the end of October).

but as others have said, though i absolutely love Vegas, it is an entirely different vacation then Aruba. In aruba, you can gamble or relax or both. In vegas, relaxation is not on the menu. so if you want to just go out to shows, dinners, gamble & shop and don't really care about relaxing, Vegas is alot of fun . but usually I need a vacation after vegas, and i've been there so many times but I still am exhausted when i get home.

Git rid of Him, Just kidding you will not find a better Place then Aruba, I have been to most of the Carriben Islands and I would not spend the night on most, Aruba is one of the safest and the People are by far the nicest. Bill

Been to Barbados 3 times, twice on a cruise ship and once for a week vacation.

Aruba is 1000 times safer than Barbados. We enjoyed Barbados but did not enjoy the freedom to explore in the same comfortable environment. Beaches were nice but you had to be careful where you wander. Airport is longer to the hotel area and downtown is crowded and a little rough.

DH went for a walk in broad daylight along the main road in St. James beach area and hurried back after watching a bunch of "thugs" pull out their knives.

Restaurants were not as good as Aruba and again, that comfort level traveling around not the same. Even beaches, more comfortable in Aruba as in Barbados you need to much more careful.

A good point made, if you are going to travel in October, I would be wary of going anywhere that is located in the hurricane zone.

All in all, we did like Barbados and enjoyed our time there but not sure if we would go again for an extended time but on a cruise it was a nice stop. Same point though, wouldn't want to be on a Caribbean cruise during hurricane season.
happiness is going to Aruba with your adult kids because they still want to come with their parents
