Rental Cars vs. Taxis?

Hey everyone!

I have been reading alot about taxi's and charges for taxing around Aruba -- would my wife and I be better off just renting a car for the week?

Or is it better to taxi it? How reliable are the taxis? and how long to do they take to pick you up at a location?

Thanks!!

Re: Rental Cars vs. Taxis?

My husband and I always rent a car. We like the freedom of not having to wait. If you want to go to dinner, you wait for the cab, then you wait again when you're finished. Vacations are too short to be waiting all the time in my opion. We travel during high season and get a small, economy car for $370 for 2 weeks. That's $185 p/wk and I figured round trip airport alone is going to cost around $50 w/tip. Add in 3 or 4 nights of dining out (where walking is not an option) so maybe another $60, not to mention exploring the island. Usually we only use 1 tank of gas or less so I feel it's worth the $ to rent for a week.

Rent a car. Taxi can be pricey ! call Hedwinas car rental or amigo. They are the cheapest.

Re: Rental Cars vs. Taxis?

Taxis are very reliable. If you like to eat at different restaurants and also like to go to the other side of the island (Baby Beach)
then I would rent a car, because the taxis are expensive.
You can get rates for a small car for about $185.00 per week on the internet.
Or, once you there, you can rent a car for 3 days from Economy or any other rental.
We do it like this every year.

Re: Rental Cars vs. Taxis?

We stayed in the Ponton suburb and took taxis downtown and to the beach. There are lots of them all over around the clock. It is easy to budget because the rates are fixed, not metered.
I guess it depends on how far and often you will be driving whether renting a car is cheaper. If you do so make sure you have a good road map because there are very few signs to direct you.

Re: Rental Cars vs. Taxis?

You'd only need a car during the very busy holiday weeks (Christmas, Feb. break, etc.)
Most other times, cabs are plentiful and fast. ART

Re: Rental Cars vs. Taxis?

I used a rental for one trip and a taxi for the most recent. If you want to explore the island I would rent a car for one day and use this day to perhaps dine at the Flying Fishbone which is a $25 fare in each direction from the high rise area. Unless you are going to go back and forth into town many times each day a cab is only $10 from the high rise section each way. At $20 round trip plus tip this is probably about 1/2 the price of a car for the day.

Presuming you rent a car for a day you can check out the lighthouse, natural bridge, natural pool (4x4 only) and baby beach.

Cabs are readily available at all the hotels and even when I took a cab to play golf after the round the staff called for a cab and it was there in 10 minutes.

Rent a car and go when and where you want. Explore the east side.

Re: Rental Cars vs. Taxis?

We put over 300 miles on our Jeep in a week, and probably about 100 of it was off road. There is a lot more you can do with a rental, and even more if it's 4WD.

Re: Rental Cars vs. Taxis?

Do not use Top Drive...They've charged us twice for one car. Still haven't gotten fixed after 5 months.
