Safety

Hi Everyone, Just 16 days until our departure and counting....hope we love it as much as many of you. Quick question....do we need to be concerned about leaving items in our rental car when we're out exploring? Is theft a problem? We've been the victims of crime in both Hawaii and nearly on St. Martin, so I'm typically pretty cautious. Just wondering how vigilant we need to be in Aruba. Thanks for your feedback!

Yes, be cautious. Leave nothing in sight expecially at the beach.

Valuables should not be out in the open in a car no matter where in the world you go. Something worth $$ sitting behind glass in a car is too tempting.

Aruba is a safe Island - but there is still petty crime. Bring a backpack with you for valuables - use your trunk - and leave stuff back at your hotel.

Use common sense....in Aruba and everywhere.

Mix common sense with a bit of paranoia and you should be fine

I think if you don't want to risk losing it, then you should keep it with you or in your hotel room. There is small crime and theft

If you are renting a car - check with Amex for coverage. All insurance coverage (even the extra one) does not cover theft. Amex has a great program for about $49 - worth every penny.

Plus - if possible do not rent a white Toyota Yaris - there is a good "blackmarket" for parts on the island for them.

Amex Premium Car Rental Protection
"Depending on the coverage level that you choose, a premium of either $19.95 or $24.95 per rental ($17.95 for California Residents) will be charged to your American Express Card until your enrollment is terminated."

You MUST enroll in advance, however you will not be charged until the time of the rental.

The thieves are very bold at Baby Beach. While I was there 2 different cars were broken into due to things being left out. They got in by breaking the windows. Baby Beach is very remote. Unless you have a cell phone, the police are a long way off. Even if you do have a phone, you are pretty much out of luck unless you are able to physically restrain the perps. Nothing of value should be left in the car.
