    saving for trips

How do you save up for your trips? Do you do anything special to put money away? I have an Aruba Minions bank that my son received as a present that I am going to empty today. If you can guess the amount to a penny I will buy your drinks for a year in Aruba, lol. If it helps I have only been putting money into it since we came back in July. I put spare cash/coins I have in my pocket when I walk in my house. Some days nothing goes in, some days a few bucks.... I won't get far with the money but its one of the ways I save as I consider it free money....I like setting money aside and NOT taking it directly out of my bank to go away....yes, I am very weird when it comes to money....my best friend things I am very odd to say the least as I am very particular how I spend my cash/save etc.

We have a separate account for vacation/house projects and put X amount in it automatically each month. I prefer vacation to be paid for before we go. It also helped that we sold our cottage this summer and didn’t feel the least bit guilty about taking a couple of extra trips with some of the proceeds. Another thing I do or actually don’t is I don’t spend $1 bills; instead when I get them in change I just stash them away. You would be surprised at how quickly they add up.

years ago when we were both working full time we had a vacation account that we contributed to often.

in recent years, we scrimp and save.

    it is a challenge indeed.

Years ago we would save our tax refund for our trips. Refunds not too big anymore (if any) but another thing we started many years ago was no Christmas presents for DH or I to exchange. If we need something during the year we just buy it so we consider our Aruba trips our Christmas present each year.

I set it aside monthly... generally book in Dec and pay then for the air and ins.... by May, I have the rest in the bank to pay the hotel and the 'island money'..... and I always try to augment 'island money' with casino trips on the island!

Love the auto withdrawals for the different projects. Nothing wrong with spending the proceeds Peg when you use them for something that you love like Aruba!

My wife and are not exchanging gifts this year because we are headed to Aruba for Xmas. I will probably break that promise but time will tell.

I do the following. I have been getting extra taken from my check ever since I got crushed on my taxes. We now usually get enough back for at least air and most of our hotel. We use the tax free childcare account which we put 5k into over the course of the year and use that for one trip for air and hotel. I coach 3 sports in addition to teaching so those are 3 checks that are dedicated to travel and are good for spending money for 3 trips each year. Couple of other ways as well...

Off to count the change portion of my bank which appears to have much less than I thought in coins but much more in bills so I will take that trade off!

We have an account that is set aside for of our trips, as well as our boat related expenses. We have a weekly direct deposit going into the account every week. After a trip is booked and paid for from that account, I determine how much we will likely spend and divide by the number of weeks we have to save the spending money. For example, we need $1000, spread over 10 weeks, we just throw $100 a week in the account. We also have an account that is basically our spending money for day to day expenses each week. At the end of the week, whatever is left gets transferred to our vacation fund.

We do not exchange birthday, anniversary, or Christmas gifts. We decided early on just to share experiences instead, and it has worked out for us. Our summer vacay is usually around Jon's birthday and our Aruba trips lately have either been our anniversary or my birthday.
