Well, I'm more than a little upset that Aruba tries to hide these facts. I live in a resort town, but anyone can go online or watch the news and see the amount of crimes committed on a daily basis here. I'm not proud of it, and I wish I could apologize to everyone who considers our town for vacation and experiences the things like Gaby and others have had happen to them while on vacation in Aruba. We went to Aruba our first time after that girl nobody speaks about disappeared. We still thought it was safe and have felt that way over the years. Now, maybe not so much. It's sad, but if this is the way the authorities in Aruba want to do business, there are a lot of other places to go on vacation... Costa Rica, Belize, Phuket anyone?? Sorry, I'm venting at y'alls expense, I'm stepping of the soapbox now Again, no offense to anyone...

Actually, there are several online Aruban newspaper who report about all the happenings daily. There were numerous articles for days in Diario, Awe24, Amigoe etc. And FB.

Just by chance I saw that a 17-year old shot and killed a young journalist in Belize, he and his friends were high on drugs and decided to kill the next person who comes by ~ just for fun!

The case in Aruba: the suspect was well known in the Old Mill nightclub. He had a fallout with the bouncer who refused to let him in. And things escalated from there.

The girl who disappeared ten years ago on Aruba ~ I'm very well familiar with that case. The case is still unsolved. In 2006 I went to Aruba for the first time. I felt very safe the entire time. But I'm also cautious. I don't drink alcohol and don't do drugs. If there is a dark street where I have my rental car parked, I looked for other tourists who would go in the same direction and asked them if we could walk together.

The following was posted less than 25 min ago when I googled murder in Costa Rica --

Costa Rican authorities have arrested a suspect in the killing of a U.S. social worker who was found stabbed to death at a hotel in the Central American nation's capital.

    Belize? No, thanks!

I just checked it out. Here is an excerpt, more info at link:

    Crime Rating: High

    Crime Threats

The majority of crimes are burglaries and thefts, often without injuries. In 2014, however, there were a disturbing number of robberies that ended in serious injuries and fatalities. Corruption, human smuggling/trafficking, the drug trade, money laundering, and organized gang activity remain significant problems. Criminal organizations and individuals often operate beyond the ability of the police. Compounding this problem is the very modest capacity to prosecute offenders.

Due to the small population (335,000) and high murder rate per capita, Belize consistently ranks among the top 10 in the world for homicides, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, with an average of around 40 homicides per 100,000 residents. After setting an all-time record in 2012 for homicides at 145, the number of murders significantly decreased to 99 in 2013. However, in 2014 the number of murders rose to 121. The Belize District, which includes Belize City, continues to have the highest number of murders in the country, due in large part to dozens of street gangs that operate in the city.

There are murders that happen everywhere. I think we all freak out (me included) when we realize that our wonderful Island of Aruba, that we all consider paradise, is a little closer to our every day reality than we care to admit. I typically don't do many things in Aruba that I would not do at home, with the exception of walking home at 3:30 am with a grand in my pocket coming back from the casino

No offense. I get Walts point. If Aruba becomes like many of the other islands...people will find somewhere else to go and spend their hard earned cash. Me, I am getting ready to blow a whole bunch of it later tonight if/when I pull the trigger and book when of the last rooms on the island for New Years...wow is it crazy expensive!

Please make sure that topics stay on track.

This thread/topic is about the Olde Molen employee being killed and another employee being critically injured and the thug/perp in hiding.

It is not about Natalee, Costa Rica, Belize or the rampant crime elsewhere in the world.
I do not want this thread to go so far off topic that we forget the topic, and the negativity and volatility that this topic
lamentably expounds. It is so very sad.

Also, with respect to all, please, no "dead horse beating"

Now, back to diaper duty as i am typing with a 17 day old baby snuggled in the crook of my arm

Isn't that the best to be snuggling with your baby grandson.
