Time Share Question

Hi,

My wife and I were interested in purchasing a time share at the Marriott. Can anyone tell me the advantage of buying direct as opposed to on the secondary market and what the general price range might be for a 1 br.

Thanks.

Re: Time Share Question

My understanding is that when you buy from Marriott, you also earn Marriott points each year. If you buy on the secondary market (outside of Marriott) you lose this benefit.

Re: Time Share Question

Marriott rewards point program is the difference. But im sure there is ways around that. Just get a marriott rewards credit card. As far as points and the resort, if you buy through marriott you can deposit your week and get points or every year we have been going we visit the sales office (after they contact us when we get there) and they try to sell us more units. Even if you dont buy they give you a gift or points to apply to any points you already have. We love the points because we use them for weekend getaways and it doesnt cost us anything. One other thing you should know Marriott has the right to approve or disapprove the sale of any weeks. so even if you get a good price on a week Marriott has the final say !!!and can keep the sale from going through.

Re: Time Share Question

Thanks all for your input. Sounds like 6 of one, half dozen of the other with respect to buying from Marriott or on the secondary. 1 more question - how many points do they give you if you deposit your week?

Re: Time Share Question

We have owned in the marriott system since 1982 and we get 110,000 every year when we deposit our week. Now we understand that you can only get them every other year..not sure of that just what we recently heard. We also have a Marriott Visa card and put everything we can on it..The points rack up fast. Also if you are considering a Marriott purchase, if you csn, buy the 2 bedroom property, as you will find that it will rent and sell quicker if you so desire. Also the 2 bedroom is much bigger if you have family come to vacation with you.
If you go to the Marriott website..Marriott.com, there is a lot of information on their timeshares. Or you can call them at the 800 number and they will also give you the info. Hope this helps. We enjoy our Marriott and have traveled all over, but we now pretty much travel to Aruba and Hawaii. We go by ourselves 1 week and take the family the other.

Re: Time Share Question

Thanks Pat. We were considering doing the Marriott Maui timeshare - we also like doing Aruba and Hawaii (enough of the European travel for me for work!). 110K points is pretty good. More food for thought. Thanks again.

Re: Time Share Question

we own a Marriott timeshare for many years and do not get points when we deposit our timeshare to trade. It is much better to buy it a resale. Theses timeshare, especially in Aruba are too expensive/ If you plan to deposit the weeks and use it else where definately buy a resale, study before you buy. Maui Marriott timeshares are very expensive and wayyyyyyy expensive. even more then Aruba. marriott timshares are beautiful before I get attacked on this site.

Re: Time Share Question

So have you who have had the timeshares for years seen that the price has appreciated? In the back of my head i'm thinking that it may be cheaper to just pay for a hotel - that way not locked in to a location or week and at the end of the day it wont cost much more.
