Trade wind airplane turbulence?

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone has experienced turbulence when landing in Aruba due to the tradewinds? I dispise flying and just want to prepare myself for the flight ahead of me...

Thanks in advance,

Sara

Re: Trade wind airplane turbulence?

Hi Sara, I am always afraid to fly, so I sympathize. I can only tell you that in three times flying in , I have never been scared, or felt any turbulence. the pilots seem to know exactly how to counter the winds. Have a great time!

Re: Trade wind airplane turbulence?

I sympathize because I have a fear of flying too. It's the turbulance that scares me the most, but Lisa is right, the trade winds don't necessarily mean there will be a bumpy landing. I am usually more concerned w/taking off from Aruba - the wind may make it bumpy going up. That's why I prefer larger planes but I am stuck with a 737 when I leave on 6/2. Good luck - you are not alone worrying about the flying. I take valium!!!!

None on landing or take off! Usually if coming from the Northeast when you go over the Dominican Republic you get a bumpy ride maybe 20 min or so other wise normal.
Just got back wish i could be there again.
Even went up in Helicopter and it was great. Pics at www.photos.heremy.com/avilafamily

Sara, I've never felt turbulance either taking off or landing in Aruba in the 13 years I've been going there....have noticed the pilot changing the flight pattern when landing but thats about all. I don't like flying either but in order to get to "One Happy Island" we just need to have a glass of wine and go with it.. Have a great time!!!

Re: Trade wind airplane turbulence?

I used to be a "white knuckle" traveler on planes too until I started flying to Aruba. I am now a seasoned flyer and go to Aruba from the northeast at least twice a year. Every one of my landings and takeoffs from Aruba have been wonderful! It is true that the pilots know exactly how to navigate the winds. Try to relax. I tried medication the first time I flew and HATED the drug-induced feeling I had and preferred the anxiety to it. Now, I just take out a good book or magazine when we taxi to the run way. And I usually set it aside once we have clearance to leave so I can enjoy the glide up to heaven. Otherwise, I would recommend chewing gum, a soft squeeze ball, music headset (which can only be used after takeoff when the pilot indicates that it is okay to use). A glass of wine never hurts as well as holding hands with a dear one, if someone is accommpanying you. But do know that any anxiety you have during flight will immediately dispell upon landing in this paradise. I am sure you will feel that the trip was well worth any transient anxiety you may feel. Have a wonderful time!!!!
