We have not had a problem with travelers checks on the island. We use them at the grocery store, cash them at the desk or at the casino. We use CC at restaurants.

I don't doubt that established businesses will accept them. If you're more comfortable using them, by all means go for it. Especially if you can get them for free.

My issue with them is that they have become superfluous. The universal acceptance of credit cards has pretty much replaced travelers checks for safe financial transactions on vacation. I'm not sure what advantage travelers checks have that is not available with credit cards.

You mentioned "thoughts please", so even though this is not a direct answer to your question, here are my two cents worth. As you mentioned, it is hard to gwt travelers checks these days- they are all but obsolete- we used to use them instead of carrying large amounts of cash. I never use cash anymore, just carry a few bucks for incidentals. Instead I take advantage of every credit card bonus miles offer I see. I would never use a debit card, which gives dirct access to your chcking and savings accounts. With a miles credit card i use their money for a month and, in addition, accumulate miles for travel. We flew free from Detroit to Aruba on Southwest using miles. In addition, we've flown first class to Hawaii, Europe and much more. I check my credit card balance regularly to monitor it, but have not had a fradulent charge. In any case, the cc company removes any charges made fraudulently.
Look for cards with large bonuses for signing up, i.e. 30,000. I won't go into more detail here, but if anyone wants more info, just ask.
