Traveler's Checks

I always use Travelers Checks in Aruba and typically have not had any problems.

When I need cash, I usually have been able to exchange the checks for cash at the hotel lobby. Last year, this was not always the case.

Any suggestions as to where I can "cash in" traveler's checke for cash in Downtown Oranjestad? Maybe the Casino?

Believe it or not....I've never noticed a bank....probably because I've never looked for one.

Smile Traveler checks

I have never had any problem cashing them at any casino,Linh and sons for close to amount spent usually a $100 check I was told the bank may charge you for cashing. Also even the desk in most any hotel I have stayed in will be happy to change $100 or so.Now in Florida that is a completely different story. They want to fingerprint you and two-three forms of idea and they make you wait until they call back to where they are from like AAA,Visa,or American Express to check #s on checks.I still feel now that most mastercard companies are charging 3% extra on your bill for any charges in Aruba that I will use them going out to dinner at most places my next trip. I did in Feb 09 with no problem.

>>> "Last year, this was not always the case."
---- Have always had no problems cashing American Express at my Resort.
Where were you staying? Now restaurants just won't cash them but over 20 years have never had a problem using them to pay my bill.
Understand somewhere in Aruba there is a American Express office. If you use them could go there.
Yes casinos will cash them. Might need ID.
>>> "I was told the bank may charge you for cashing"
---- Never went to one but heard that also.
There are a few banks on the main road coming out of downtown as you get to the markets.

Renaissance..... it's not that they wouldn't cash them...it was a matter of them sometimes saying that they didn't have sufficient cash on hand.

No experience in the casinos, but...

we use only credit cards on the island.

We also travel with a couple of hundred dollars in $1's & 5's for incidentals and taxis. Taxi drivers appreciate not having to make change from large bills.
