    Tsunami Alert

At 11:12 am I hear my text messages ding and this is what was there.

    TSUNAMI ALERT FOR
    ARUBA: GO TO HIGH
    GROUND OR INLAND.
    ALERTA DE TSUNAMI
    PARA ARUBA: IRI-
    JASE A TERRENO EL-
    EVADO O TIERRA
    ADENTRO. IT IS A
    DRILL-ES UN SIMU-
    LACRO.

Scared the you-know-what out of me. I looked outside and everything looked fine. I checked online and discovered it was it drill. It did say it is a drill in English in the text, but it is in the middle-toward the end of the Papiamento or Spanish. I stopped reading when I saw the change in language. I showed the message to hubby and he couldn't even find the part saying it is a drill. I was in the condo when I received the text because we were going to go out for lunch and to pick up the rest of our pictures. I was so glad I was not on the beach or the pool when I got this message.

    it was a drill

the "drill" notification was supposed to have been told to all via tv, newspapers, radio .
the resorts also knew of it and did not spread the word that it was a drill

The sentence "It is a drill." Should have been with the English, not mixed in later in the text. I spoke with several people and they didn't even know it happened.

Wow! I'm with you Robin - I would have stopped reading when it started in Papiamento! Glad you were able to learn that super valuable lesson while there was no danger! I bet you'll read all the way thru from now on!

there are tons of people that were needlessly frightened.

how far inland are folks expected to go?

robin....did any of your neighbors say anything to you and what their reaction was?

    i just smh.
the word drill should have been in the beginning, middle and end.

Nobody I spoke to even knew about it. I read on FB that police were telling people to get off the beach and that text messages got to some people when the drill was happening and others much later in the day. I guess because I have the sim card, I got the message. If I didn't, I never would have known.

As far inland are people supposed to go? We surrounded by water, so I have no clue what would be safe less you climbed to the top Hooiberg. Hubby's response was we would be safe on the fourth floor. I'm no so sure.

A few days ago I noticed in some local newspaper the talk about "tsunami". As I don't speak Papiamento, it didn't make too much sense until I read your thread, Robin. It must have been scary, receiving this text message!

Here is the article (in Papiamento, unfortunately, they didn't publish it in the "English" section as well). They mention "Tsunami training" and "Carib Wave":
    http://www.noticiacla.com/news/12245

I checked Facebook and found a good explanation: It's an annual exercise, 48 countries participated, Aruba was one of them:
    https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=CARIBEWAVE18

When I googled it, the "Pacific Tsunami Warning Center" sent out the following message:

    000
    WECA41 PHEB 151400
    TSUCAX

    TEST...TSUNAMI EXERCISE MESSAGE NUMBER 1...TEST
    NWS PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER/NOAA/NWS
    1400 UTC THU MAR 15 2018

TEST...CARIBEWAVE 18 TSUNAMI EXERCISE MESSAGE. REFER TO PTWC
MESSAGE 1 IN THE EXERCISE HANDBOOK. THIS IS AN EXERCISE...TEST

THIS MESSAGE IS BEING USED TO START THE CARIBEWAVE18 CARIBBEAN
TSUNAMI EXERCISE. THIS WILL BE THE ONLY EXERCISE MESSAGE
BROADCAST FROM THE PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER EXCLUDING
SPECIAL EMAIL MESSAGES DISCUSSED IN THE EXERCISE HANDBOOK. THE
HANDBOOK IS AVAILABLE AT THE WEBSITE - CARIBEWAVE.INFO. THE
EXERCISE PURPOSE IS TO PROVIDE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT A REALISTIC
SCENARIO TO TEST TSUNAMI RESPONSE PLANS.

THIS IS ONLY A TEST. DO NOT TAKE ACTION BASED ON THIS TEST
    MESSAGE.
