Commodity-based economies are tricky at the best of times. Aruba needs to find another segment to latch on to... eco-travel, green energy, Star Wars action figure manufacturing.
Action figure manufacturing...great idea!! Or they could use the other side of the island as to simulate Tatoonie or Jaku. And rent out costumes where visitors can dress up as Storm Troopers, Jawas, Sand People, Henchmen at Jabas palace. Maybe even make a Sarlac Pit.
But back to Andrea's original post (oops), it would be great if Aruba could exploit all its natural charm and weather to get it away from the oil-based dependence. The weather alone might go a long way in attracting considerable talent to the island for areas like R&D and exploratory science.
With the sun, wind and sea Aruba could very well become a center for Research and Development, especially in terms of alternate sources of energy to power homes, business and resorts. I recall coming across a short video on Youtube a few years ago on the use of renewable energy. I've attached a link to the video, fingers crossed that it works.
