We got great advice for the Hilton from cpjones: Reserve a palapa as far away from Bugaloe as you can go. We did this a few days and had no umbrellas in front of us even with cruise ships in.

That is the only area I would pay for front row. If nothing is available there, we would pay to reserve 2nd row or further back because of the umbrella issue.

Our biggest disappointment when it came to water sports and umbrella rentals was at the Surf Club. But at the end of our stay we ended up renting an umbrella as it was the easiest way to get front row.
Some of their palapas are directly behind vendors and it shows on their map when you are signing up. My advice, stay away, it is far from relaxing in those spots.
We had a similar spot at Holiday Inn, directly behind a vendor, and we ended up switching to be further back just to get away from it.
Not sure when, but we will be back

A positive! Still having somewhat young kids, I like being right on the side of the one vendor in front of LaCabana. Makes it much easier for the kids to find our palapa. Julio is a very nice guy and it's nice to chat with him too.

I have at the Radisson (Hilton)... but only for choice of front row. Of course, we've always stayed in early July and never had a problem getting one for free.... just not front row.

I would book early, prices will rise not fall. I am waiting to get the price on staying at the Ritz next NYE but won't pay $1500 nightly, my max will be closer to 1k and that will put me back at the Hyatt or potentially the Hilton next NYE. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Just looked and the cheapest room at the Hilton next year over Christmas and New Years is $620 a night.

Do not know if the cabanas belong to the Riu or are available for rent from the vendor to the south of these.

Yes, out of convenience. When it was Radisson, they did sign ups in the afternoon the day before. We chose to pay to reserve rather than give up precious happy hour time. I would prefer the option to pay over waiting in line any time of day. We are also kind of picky on where we like to sit so taking what's left isn't ideal for us. We paid for reservations at the Surf Club a couple days too. We know, we know, anyone can come sit under our palapa if we aren't there according to the law, but that's a risk I'm willing to take as we haven't had an issue yet.

When we stay at the Hilton, we rent the same two palapa's every time we go down, I email them and I advise them of the dates and that's it, all done.

Tracey we are like you. When we stayed at the Hilton (radisson) we always emailed and secured our palapa before we left our trip.. My time is worth more than $30 hour on vacation, lol, and I really value it.
