Lots of posts about the dangers of going to Venezuela - the upshoot is, Chavez is not a nice guy and isn't especially fond of Americans....stick with Aruba

For an alternative, why not try Curacao instead? It may be an ABC Island, but it has great differences from Aruba and is a unique island place unto itself.

Years ago, before Venezuela had its current trouble, my husband's best friend went to Venezuela on business. Even back then, he never felt safe there. Since he is 6' 4" and worked most of his life in NYC, I reckon its best avoided (sadly). Especially with the kids.
I wouldn't take a side trip unless you're in Aruba for at least two weeks. |

don't go to venezuela..i've been there and it truly is not safe..the shopping district is about two square blocks and there are policemen armed with uzis walking around..they tell you not to venture off the two square block radius because it's not safe and they cannot help you if anything happens..kids bother you while you're shopping for money which makes for a very annoying experience..i wouldn't try to drive around by myself either..do yourself a favor and stay in aruba and enjoy yourselves..
