it's a hit or miss. you don't have to dial the country code for verizon. dialing the area code + number works. the networks know to route your number to the states. the charges are the same $1.99/minute.

the best thing to do is pull the battery out of your phone and then plug it back in. this will reset the phone and POSSIBLY allow it to find and connect to the roaming network in aruba. this will allow you to make calls. the problem i always had was the phone not recognizing the roaming network. however, text messages always seem to work without a hitch. it's a much cheaper way to communicate if you can - $0.25 to send and i think $0.50 to receive - or vice versa.

I have question....I have Verizon but was not planning on using my cell to make calls while in Aruba. However, if I plan to text to family back home do I have to call Verizon to set up an international plan or is that just for phone calls?

DH says you have to make sure it says Setar on your phone Setar 2G or 3G. If it says anything other than Setar it won't work. Go to the mobile network setup on your phone. We have our Verizons working but we had to do that as it kept trying to give us different providers (Digicel, etc.).

I believe you have to contact Verizon to text as well. DH is busy texting with our g-son all the time. I don't know how to do it and don't really want to know

You will be better off if you request from Verizon that they "Unlock" your phone so that you can use a simm card from Aruba. You can buy a simm card at the airport for $20.00 that includes your own phone number and 80 minutes of talk time. This is the cheapest way to make calls to the States other than a Skype phone.

    Regards,

    Verizon phone in aruba

got word from verizon that all of their phones on CDMA will not work in aruba to make calls to the states. their partner carrier in aruba that relayed the CDMA transmissions is experiencing difficulties since early this year and apparently it still hasn't been fixed. however, if you have a verizon phone that can switch networks to GSM (blackberry storm) you can use it to call the states.

however, you will be able to receive calls. and you will be able to send/receive text messages.

Well that explains why I had so many problems last month.
