I dont think that there is any radio that will work better in Aruba. You are not trasmitting across a certain network. You will go from portable to portable. So if you have a decent set of radios you will be ok. Most of them transmit on the FRS, so you may get some other people on the same channel. Most of them have multiple channels and subchannels. So hopefully you can get one to yourself. Most of those radios can only transmit at a certain power or they need an FCC license, in the US at least.

We also use Motorola walkie talkies with the kids. They shop downtown and we stay at the Renn just to give you an idea how far they transmit.

I have never seen a radio that can transmit 20 miles. Even professional radios that transmit with higher powers cannot transmit 20 miles. So radio to radio without a repeater, i don't think can transmit 20 miles.

    Walkie talkies

Has anyone ever tried these in Aruba? Radio Shack has what appears to be decent long range walkie talkies. Do they work well or should we rent some cell phones for island use?

    check out this thread
    walkie talkie

when our son was younger and we tried them a few times while in aruba.
they were ok for our needs.
we were able to make fair communications from tamarijn to the alhambra area and alhambra area to lacabana.
