What do you expect when visiting Aruba?

I have had the oppotunity to speak with a number of people from many different places who have been here vacationing on the island. In conversation it was interesting learning why these folks came to Aruba. So...here is the question what do you expect when you come to Aruba?

Great question! As always, I expect safety, wonderful restaurants, relaxing time with my wife on Palm Beach, great local people, warm Caribbean waters, reading my favorite authors on the beach, a few tries at the casino, walks along the beach with DW and more than one icy cold Amstel Bright!

I can say I was a bit disapointed this time around. This was my 3rd visit. We rented a car as usual for our "off road" adventure around the island. Normally you could reach the lighthouse, church, then circle around the ocean, then reach the goldmine, natural bridge, etc. This time it was blocked off, and had to turn around. They are paving more and more roads. You have to pay to go up to the natural pool, if you travel by yourself. This I understand, as it only helps the island. We went in off season, and it was crowded. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed my time there, as the Radisson was a great place to stay. (large beach area/resort) And being near the pier gave great nightlife. But, I must say next vacation I think i will be looking at the sister island Curaco, St. Kitts, or even St. Lucia. Personally how much bigger can the Marriott get? And now the Ritz? Just my opinion. Aruba will always be a great place to go.

Relaxation, complete relaxation. We also love the excellent fresh fish at most of our dinners and the feeling of safety. The Aruban people are so welcoming without the pestering feel you can get in some of the other islands.
Not sure when, but we will be back

Someone asked me the other day, why Aruba every year, what is it that attracts you. It was an easy question to answer, great weather, crappy gambling, but gambling nevertheless, nice beaches calm warm sea, friendly people, awesome restaurants, and the ability to be active or be a beached whale, whichever i prefer.
With that said, I have been feeling similiar to Maryj0W.
I dont travel much on the island other than to restaurants, as I have been going for so long that all i want is relaxation. But I returned from my annual trip to Mecca (Palm Beach) last week, and was feeling, enough already with the construction.
It is just getting too crowded. The beach is practically wall to wall people, you wait at good restaurants, even with a reservation, there is traffic EVERYWHERE. The Ritz is a monstrosity, and the Hard Rock, which they are starting soon, will be one more hotel on an already overbuilt beach island.
When i got home i started thinking about where else i could go. I thought about Bonaire, but i am afraid it would be too quiet. (the opposite of Aruba). Would be ok with me, but wifey needs action. I looked into Curacao, the Marriott there looks nice. But the reviews on trip advisor were lukewarm, and from what i have read, the beach doesnt compare, its rocky and small.
I've been to St Kitts, i liked it, but same thing with the beach. Rocks, waves, etc. Also, all the islands, other than ABC, are subject to weather issues.
So i guess i am "stuck" with Aruba, could be worse.

Still i would love to see other suggestions, but i know this forum is sponsored by the Aruba Tourism Authority, so apologies. My message for ATA: MAKE THEM STOP BUILDING.

What do I "expect" - great weather, friendly people, relaxation, beautiful beaches, breezes, great food and drink. 5 years ago, my boyfriend wanted to take me on a trip. He has traveled all over the Caribbean and decided Aruba would be the place to take me on my first trip. He decided on Aruba because of the weather (outside the hurricane belt) and safety. We have returned every year for 5 years and are planning on going again next spring. Why - because we KNOW what to expect. I like knowing where I'm going, what to expect and receive. Every year he asks if I want to try somewhere else - nope! Why - I love Aruba!! Maybe someday if friends are going somewhere and we want to join them - until then, Aruba here we come!!

Dont get my last post wrong, Aruba is a great place to go for GREAT BEACHES, GREAT WEATHER!! BUT, its becoming a bit too commercial. Time Shares, new hotels, its loosing its "island" effect. Tours to the natural pool, I remember finding that mountain on your own.
