What do you like about Downtown?

I am posting this after reading the parking thread and thinking about some of our previous visits. We have limited experience in the downtown area, but that will change in November when we stay a few nights at the Renaissance Marina Hotel.

Here's my story: We have only been downtown to go to Driftwood and walk around after, the marina to go on a fishing trip, and one day we took some friends to check out the shopping but all we saw were touristy shops with souvenirs that were nothing special and stores we could find at home. On our shopping day, we had the driver drop us off where he thought was a good starting place. I don't think it was that great of a spot.

So here's my question, what brings you downtown? What should we not miss while we are staying there?

**I should add that our current November plans include checking out West Deck and Yemanji and maybe Iguana Joes for a happy hour

What do "I" like about downtown? Everything!

What could I recommend for you to see? That's a tough one as our tastes are probably different. As I traveled by myself to Aruba (DH taking care of all our doggies), I don't do the big dining out thing. When downtown, I like Hung (Chinese restaurant). One of my favorite was "Pancake House" at the Seaport Mall but the last time I was there, the whole atmosphere had changed, there was a new owner who had turned it rather into a sports bar.

One of my favorite restaurants is "Aquarius" in the Renaissance Mall, they had a wonderful buffet with sushi, lots of fresh salads and fruits.

For me, downtown is always a "must see". I LOVE walking along they yacht haven, all the way behind that casino where the beautiful yachts are located. At the same time, having a great view out to the ocean. When there, I checked if the helicopter was there. I enjoy strolling through the Seaport Mall, they had lots of cute little stores with gorgeous, unique items (not sure if they are still there).

Then I continued walking through Wilhelmina Park. Many times, I got lucky and discovered some mini "dinosaurs". LOL My camera is my constant companion. I would walk where the West Deck is now. Back then, it was a very serene spot with just some local fishermen. If it is during sunset time, this is a fantastic spot to take pictures.

Another of my favorite strolls is the Renaissance Mall, crossing the street with the little bridge and I enter where the parking area of the Renaissance is because I love this big fountain there. I always spend time in the area where the boat goes out. In 2006 or 2007 they had this "jungle" decoration there and on the wall of the Renaissance building a giant painting of a parrot. Unfortunately, it's not there anymore. But I keep going back and checking if they came up with a new idea.

Another stop is the "pink cake", this big building with lots of small stores and restaurants in it. I just enjoy being there and soaking it all up.

For me, Oranjestad is the capital of Aruba and the heart of it.

    To be continued...

Downtown was my first visit and it was so amazing.. Ditto on what RK1 just said.
Walking downtown anytime of the day or night felt so safe and such a warm welcome from the locals...
This was one vacation that I could of stay and not go back home...
Can't wait to go back next year again. Would like to try a different part of the island but got spoiled there

You all are getting me excited! I think we may like the Ocean Suites side better with the lagoon and the swim up bar, but price has us at the marina tower.
Are there any music venues downtown in the evenings? I have to keep the hubby happy since I am dragging him away from his beloved Palm Beach
I think he will love the yachts and the marina. We are boaters and we always enjoy that type of atmosphere. I love the colorful buildings. I can't wait to get pictures.

most evenings at the seaport marketplace, way down in the back is an area where local performers/bands play.
some evenings we sit there and enjoy the music for a while.

there is a little bar that plays music most evening almost directly across from wilhemena park.
i am sorry i cannot remember the name.

I love the atmosphere downtown - even the cheesy souvenir huts. We love the Paddock for a Balashi and sandwiches. I enjoy walking around the malls & shops both at the mall area & behind it (Main St). West Deck was GREAT and the linear park path is awesome for a stroll.

I'm like Tracy; haven't spent a lot of time downtown. We'll be spending a few nights at the Rennaisance at the end of our vacation. I do like sitting at the Paddock watching people come and go. Since I'm a shopper I enjoy poking in as many stores as possible. Gandelmans Jewelry is one place that tends to draw me in but Tom would probably like me to avoid

Hanging out at the Paddock watching people come and go is always fun. Of course, we also plan on heading to West Deck for lunch one day. Hopefully I'll be able to find the building with all the Aruban artisan wares, and I'm sure we'll have some casino time, or at least Tom will when I leave him there while I go shopping.

For shopping, we like downtown better than the malls/shopping areas at the high rises. The prices are certainly better! There are some very good restaurants downtown. Casa Tua, Yemanji, Cuba's Cooking, Iguana Joes and more. We love the West Deck. The variety of offerings downtown is what makes it great, from the lowest cost souvenir huts to the top jewelry stores and everythign in between.
