From the Aruba Herald regarding the explosion:

"The Meteorological Department of Aruba (DMA) said the seismograph in the area of the hotels and Noord at 10:41:19.3 a.m. recorded an activity of 1.1 on the Richter scale, which lasted 10 seconds.

The seismograph did not record an earthquake, but converted the information of the Calbas Gavilan dump explosion to the equivalent in Richter. Further analysis showed a similar recording 4 minutes later by the seismograph in Paraguana. The waves recorded were typical of an explosion and not an earthquake, DMA added."

As per an updated news article from the Aruba Herlad:

People in neighborhoods surrounding Calbas felt a strong explosion between 10 and 11 a.m. on Monday. Windows on some houses in the direct neighborhood of the Gavilan dump in Calbas were shattered by the impact, in one home a part of the ceiling caved in.
Cars on the Gavilan property were badly damaged by the impact. Employees of the Department of Public Works apparently had been trying to dispose of explosives - old fireworks and illegal fireworks that had been confiscated, when something went wrong, the result was an explosion which could be compared to a 1.1 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale.

After the explosion the police closed off the area, fearing more explosions. Three men were injured, two were not even able to walk. Neighbors said it was not the first time they heard explosions coming from the area, but this was the largest one to date.

Minister of Justice Arthur Dowers drove around the neighborhood of Calbas after the incident. He said he will meet with the disaster bureau and other concerned organizations on what had taken place. An investigation is ongoing to determine the risk of another explosion and to find out what had gone wrong.

    kaboom

here is the info that i received from a friend on island:
    Hey Andrea-
If anyone askes what the explosions was, public works was trying to get rid of some expired/confiscated fireworks in Calabas. Something went very wrong and the explosion was felt from St. Cruz to the beaches, 3 injured- hearing loss is what we know for now. Buildings in the area suffered damage (porch roofs coming down, broken windows) from the blast.
    It is on 24ora already!
