    When do you get home?

Another post brought this to mind. When on vacation in Aruba, do you stay till the last possible minute, take the last flight out, then get up for work the next day back or do you plan a day or two buffer to recover after the trip? I know some of us are retired and could care less, but how about those who still work for a living? We usually plan at least one day to recover after our return. This one day buffer came in handy the year we were delayed leaving Aruba and had to spend the night in Miami, making us get home hours before having to go to work the next day. It wasn't an ideal situation, but we didn't have to call in for another day off.

when we were both working full time, we always had a "buffer day" inbetween aruba and going back to work.
that was laundry and whining day.

now retired, but working now both of us part time, we try to leave a buffer day or 2 or 3 but if we can't, it is no biggie.

If it were up to me I would plan so that I could go directly from the airport to the office, giving me every last second to spend in Aruba. My husband likes a buffer day or two....annoying, but now that we have Fri-Fri timeshares it kinda works out well for him.

We're at the mercy of Canadian airlines - WestJet, Air Canada or Sunwing...depending on what airline we fly, we'll get a one day buffer because (e.g.) Air Canada flies Saturday to Saturday. Or, if we fly WestJet, they'll fly Sunday to Sunday so no buffer.

But each airline is now opening up mid-week flights so we have some flexibility on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Like Jacki, we maximize the time we spend on the island and just fly home and deal with it. We're in the lucky position of being able to do laundry on the island and not have to worry about that at home.

Is this the right thread to bring up gravy again?

    Heh.

No buffer. We both adjust our work calendars though so that the following day we are both working from home and don't have to go into the office. We can sleep in a little and also do laundry, etc. while working.

I always do laundry the night before we leave - I bring the suitcases out to the laundry room when the dryer is finishing so I can fold & pack right into the cases.

We try to plan a buffer of one day off no matter what day we fly, especially in the winter. My husband's job requires him to do a lot of extra work when people call in and he leads by example. It drives him crazy when people can't make it to work because of flight issues, which seems to happen a lot there for some reason. Even if we come home on a Sunday, we schedule Monday off just in case. He also leaves for work at 2am so getting home the night before at 11 or 12 isn't enough for him. For me, I just like taking off as many days as possible...lol. That being said I'd rather add the days on the front of the trip and be in Aruba. We've decided that Saturday flights home may be a necessary evil for the next couple trips jist to get the most island days.

When we were working we always had a buffer day. My preference was to fly home on Thursday do that our buffer day was really a long weekend.
