If you do buy the portable wireless Skype wi-fi phone, you can actually just walk around the area you will be in and the phone will indicate when there is an available wi-fi. The only problem with the list that Bill provided is that you must pay to gain access or a password is required. There are many free wi-fi areas which are open and do not require a password on the island. I always use the free wi-fi in the vicinity of T.G.I.F. across from the Holiday Inn, as this is a very strong signal and you will get excellent reception.
If you are at the airport, there is free wi-fi at the American Airlines lounge area. (You can obtain a strong signal directly outside their private lounge). I hope this helps. Regards, Last edited by Retagger; 10-30-2008 at 12:04 AM. |

Thanks everyone for your replies. I am thinking about it but did not know about the charges to gain access in most of these areas. For the amount of calls we make we might just stick to the internet cafe. The only bad thing with that is there is no privacy. I will have to think about it a little more.

I'm coming to Aruba for Christmas and will be staying at a hotel that has a WiFi-Aruba hotspot. I'm debating whether or not to bring my computer or to just pack light and use my iPhone and leave it in Airplane mode (to avoid racking up hundreds of dollars in intl data roaming fees) and enable wifi. Are the wifi hotspots DHCP that redirect you to a log-in website the first time you try to access the internet? I'm trying to figure out if I'll be able to get by with just my iPhone. Anyone have any experience using an iPhone with an Aruba hot-spot? I want to be able to do some internet research in my room to help plan out our days and find restaurants, etc. I could print out a whole bunch of stuff ahead of time, but I'd rather save the paper.
Many thanks. Edit -- I just learned that ATT offers an international data plan of $25 for 20 MB of BW transfer. That's another option. How fast are the cell data networks on Aruba? I'm thinking that this might be a better way to go because then I'll be able to browse anywhere and not be limited to my room. Last edited by reggaemylitis; 11-19-2008 at 06:53 PM. |

Dh is much more knowledgable in these things and says that you are much better off lugging the laptop for a much less expensive, and faster option, besides the ability of not having to worry about BW limits.

Thanks for the input. The iPhone is 3G so that is good news. I can use it as a laptop computer with its built-in wi-fi capability (basically I disable all of the "phone" functions and it becomes a hand-held laptop). So maybe I'll bring it and pay for a 1-week wifi plan.
Do you know if I can use the same wifi account at all the hot-spots that are listed above for Wi-Fi Aruba? i.e. pay once and use it wherever there is a hot-spot? Thanks! |
