    WIFI and data question Help

Ok I am admitting my inexperience with phone data. Last cruise I went on I was advised to turn airplane setting on and prohibit data charges on phone. Now that I have an iPhone 6 plus I like taking photos with it. I know I can still use that function when airplane mode is active. What happens when I'm in area receiving wifi? Can the phone feature to make calls and Internet be used? Then turn off airplane mode when out of range. Last time my son received a whopping phone bill upon return. That was when places had limited WIFI

    Any beach!!
I have a 5S. When we travel I put it in airplane mode and it stays there. I use the resort's wifi; turning the wifi on through the phone settings. You can access you're mail through the web and also use FaceTime.

    In the pool.
You can use Skype, FaceTime, Google Hangouts, etc. in place of your phone - they all work over wifi (i.e. you don't need a mobile network to use them).
