ORANJESTAD — It will not be long before the Aruba Marine Park is established, according to the Minister of Tourism, Labor and Transport, Otmar Oduber (AVP).

The Aruba Marine Park will be an organization that conducts the control and the management of the coast and waters. The organization will consist of representatives from various organizations, amongst which the coastguard and the beach police.
Minister Oduber states one has already been working hard on the preparations for the park since a few months. The project was recently presented to the Council of Ministers. There will be an official presentation in the parliament in another two to three weeks, during which the legal structure of the park will be announced.
“With the founding of the marine park, more nature areas of Aruba will receive a protected status”, says Oduber. “The park will receive a very broad scope. All other policies with regard to our coast and beaches will be included in such, for example the rules for water sports and beach use, the palapa-policy, but also the rules with regard to building constructions on the beaches, bars and restaurants.”
The Minister also states the government will take measures to make sure beach companies cooperate with the objective of the marine park. To that extent, the permit demands for exploitation on the beach will be adjusted.

If this was in place a few years ago it might have saved the original Fisherman Huts area.

Just one of the areas to focus on are the mangroves. The are a large ecosystem which need to be protected to benefit all of the nature on the island. I hope the legislation also gives protective status to Spanish Lagoon as well.

Why mangroves are important
