Re: Airport taxes and fees for lap baby
Hi Cheryl & Jeff,
Bringing our baby to Aruba was one of the best decisions we made. We really had a great time & found there to be lots of infants on the island. Most people very happy to come over and talk with him/us and see our baby. I had no trouble with bringing him to restaurants, I just brought our stroller everywhere we went. (PS - you can wheel your baby right down to the plane when you board, and the airlines will stow away the stroller for you. This way, when you get off, they will get it right back to you. It avoids the hastle of checking it in.)
We stayed at Paradise Beach Villas, Timeshare. I don't think it's necessary to bring a pack n play since they are so heavy to lug around and the beach does get so hot. Then again, my son wasn't really mobile at that time, where as I'm sure both of your kids are. I am a beach person, but with the little one, we mostly stayed by the pool and stayed under a papala with him in the stroller. The ocean was pretty rough the week we were there anyhow, so I didn't bring the baby in. He loved swimming in the pool though. I brought 2 packs of swimmy diapers.
Our timeshare supplied us a crib. It's not sized like the ones in the US, but it was fine enough for one week, and it was clean. They used queen sized sheets folded under, along with sheets on top, but I took all the top sheets off.
I brought our diapers, but in the future I will just bring enough to get by, then purchase them at the supermarket. There was only a small price difference and I think it's worth the extra room/weight in the suitcase. I told this to my friend that travelled a week after us, and she bought her diapers down there. The supermarkets have formula and baby food, but you might want to bring your own since you can't be certain that they carry your brand.
Definately bring warmer clothes for the evenings, it does get cool with the airconditioning. I brought our son a few sleepers and long sleeved shirts. I over packed with his day clothes. He mostly just wore a onesie or his diaper along with a hat. Bring lots of sunscreen.
Our son was excellent on the plane. I did give him 2ml of tylenol just before takeoff on both trips and I'm sure it helped him. I just brought a lot of toys in his diaper bag to keep him occupied. I fed him on the landings and takeoffs to help with the pressure on his ears.
I also bought him a little blow up duck tub which was great. I used it to bathe him at night, and during the day I brought it to the pool. I left it behind for my friend that arrived a week later. Her 6 month old daughter loved it as well. I recommend bringing something like that, it will be useful.
Good restaurants to visit with and infant - Madame Jeannett's - you can stroll around outside if you need to. Aqua Grille - it was big, but pretty noisy so an infant will fit right in (and the food was great.) Suisse Challet - although fancy, there were 2 other infants there while we were there & we all sat in the same area.
I'm sure you both will have great trips. It's a different type of vacation with a baby but it's well worth it. I can't wait for next year! Have a great time!
