does anyone buy used timeshares?

After reading messages on this site it appears that no one opts for a good deal and buys from owners. Why not?

Re: does anyone buy used timeshares?

I've always found it cheaper to buy from the owner then to purchase from management.

I assume you're referring to the ads on this page. How do you know no one ever buys from the owners who advertise them for sale? A private buy from an owner usually saves you several thousand dollars over buying from a resort sales office because there is no commission involved.

Re: does anyone buy used timeshares?

I have found resales 100% cheaper. There are several places on the web that sell timeshare among numerous timeshare resale offices for you to compare prices.

I don't own in Aruba but own two timeshares in Hawaii. One we use for trading while the other we bought because we like to go to the property every year. If you want a timeshare to enjoy trading you want to buy the lowest priced with lowest maintenance cost in the highest demand market. The Imperial on Oahu is probably the best bet for this. It's what we own and it has worked out fantastically.

If you want a timeshare that you plan on going back to year after year and don't want to trade then splurge and get what you like. We did this with our Maui timeshare, it's too nice to trade with most other properties so we either sell our week or use it.

I don't know what the laws are in Aruba but I know in Mexico you only have your timeshare for 20 years and then it expires. In Hawaii, at least most of them, you own for the rest of your life and you can deed it to your kids. Make sure you check out this info before you buy. Timeshares are great but you want to educate yourself on them to make sure it fits your needs.

Hi Mariann, Both types exist on Aruba. The type you own for X amount of years, and I think at those you can accelerate (if that's the right term) the number of weeks, like one year use up 2 instead of one and so forth and the deeded kind.

Re: does anyone buy used timeshares?

By Dutch law, contracts (including timeshare contracts) in Aruba are for a maxium of 30 years. However, I purchased a timeshare at the Aruba Beach Club over 30 years ago, and once the 30 years had expired, the contract was renewed for another 30 years. I do not know if all timeshares in Aruba work this way, but the ABC has been great.

So if you buy a resale, you must know how many weeks are left??????????

Don, We're (our resort) next door to you and though I haven't looked it up in my paperwork and I don't remember the wording but if my memory serves me correctly I think ours is a 60 year land lease with automatic renewal of another 60 years.....I should live so long!!
