ORANJESTAD — The loan of one and a half million florins that the Aruban government had contracted to stand surety for The Aurban hotel is entirely redeemed. Icahn Group, the new owner of the hotel has taken over the financial guarantee.

“The aforementioned means that the re-opening of the hotel actually had not cost the Aruban government anything”, says Minister Otmar Oduber (AVP) of Tourism, Labor and Transport.
Last Monday the Minister received a letter from the Aruba Investment Bank (AIB) stating the loan, which the government had concluded to stand surety for the re-opening of the hotel, is redeemed entirely.
The purchase of the hotel will be wrapped up completely this week. Oduber: “That could have been done last Friday, but a few documents from the tax department still have to be filled in yet, which will be done this week”. The soft opening of the casino of The Aruban hotel will take place on July 1st in the Key Largo Casino building. “The construction of a new casino will start in August. This will take one year and costs 21 million dollars. An additional nine million dollars will be invested in the hotel itself.” The casino will first employ 70 people – for the greater part former co-workers from Key Largo. There will be another 70 jobs when the new casino opens. “It is this government’s strict policy that locals will fill these job opportunities, although the company itself naturally wants to fill in a few positions”, the Minister explains. He also expects the timeshare salespeople of The Aruban will get going again soon.
