I saw in today's Aruba Today that the Ritz Carlton hotel project is back on! Who knows if it will happen but it was re-announced!

i do not have an MBA and i am not an economist nor have any degree or paid work experience with hotels/resots

that being said
NUTS!

the tourists are not packing the joints now
  • does anyone think that maybe there is a GLUT of rooms?
  • does anyone think that enough is enough?
  • does anyone think it is not beneficial to have to bring in outside folks to do the construction and be in the employ of the resort?

i will shut up now. i am only an aruba lover, not a resident and i have no say. just a big mouth.

Well said, Andrea! There is such a thing as "over-kill," and, perhaps, with the economy the way it is now; the lack of tourist "over-kill" would be an appropriate phrase. That being said, a MBA or being an economist or having a degree in hotel/resort management, etc., would not be necessary to analyze what is happening.

Just a thought.

The Ritz project was nixed a few years ago because of the outrage that the windsurfers would lose their wind. Then there was a proposed project by some Arubians that had it a low hotel that wouldn't block the wind.

I wonder if the wind issue is being considered when designing the hotel and what will happen this time.

I love watching the wind surfers!!!

I put a copy of the Bon Dia article on my blog. It's under the Aruba News Direct category. Who knows if this will actually be built. They're talking about 360 million florin and building it in the area of the Hadicurai/Basi Ruti.

Never know, maybe someday they'll build a hotel in Savaneta and then nothing will be left.

Whatever.

considering that the ritz is owned by marriott and the fact that marriott already has 4 properties on the island.....i find this incredulous. however, on my first trip to aruba, i did find it surprising that the island did not have a luxury resort. perhaps it's because the room prices were already heavily inflated compared to other areas. can you imagine what they would charge for a room at the ritz when a room at the stellaris starts at 400 for no view and 600+ for ocean/pool view during the high season?

that's so sad to hear...one of my favourite things to do with my wife over our last 10 years visting the island has been walking to the fisherman huts and go for a quick dip and then dry off watching the wind/kite surfers....in the near future we'll be tripping over beach chairs....glad I've had this many years of those peaceful walks..can't believe we'll be eventually be saying..."I remember when....."
