wyndham experience

We just got back from doing a 5 night stay at the wyndham. I thought I'd share some of my experience with anyone interested in choosing this place. Overall, I don't think I would go back. It was not horrible, but just didn't seem to add up to what I imagined it would be. I believe I would have preferred to stay at the radisson (which was booked during our week there). To start with, the front desk people really don't go out of the way to help. Yes, they did what they needed to do but it's just enough, as if "ok, I've done my job now next in line please". But anyway I chalked that up to they didn't seem to have enough people at the desk and there was a long line of people waiting to check in. We had requested a large bed and didn't get it. They claimed the request was just a request and if they didn't have any, too bad.

The room we stayed in was nice, nothing wrong with it. We got the upgrade from the normal room, stayed on the 13th floor. The view was good, you could see the beach. The service was so so…twice they forgot (?) to leave towels for us. But over all it was ok. Did not smell the mold that some people talked about.

The beach was nice. They have the straw type shade "trees" (sorry forget their names) but you have to get in line at 7 to make sure you get one. And they don't take your name till 8. I found that strange, it would seem that they could have someone there at 7 to start taking reservations for them. The beaches at the hotels are public though each hotel does their own setup. At the wyndham there is no hotel to one side and everyday 2 school buses would pull up to that side and about 60 kids would come running off of them into the water. Of course they had a great time but crap we left 3 kids at home to kind of get away and now this? The good thing is it only lasted an hour or two. After that 1st day we stayed away from that side of the beach. The sun is very hot, sunscreen needed!! The water was nice, warm and fairly clear. Besides the kids, it was very relaxing. Some of the other hotels had more activities but that made them a lot louder and more crowded.

The pool was ok, we didn't spend much time there. Not that deep, you could walk across it.

The outside bar was fairly crowded and the service was not that fast. The quality was spotty but not bad.

The outside restaurant was ok. Again service could have been better (quicker).

We had dinner one night on the beach, that was nice and the service was great! There is an upscale place named pargo pargo that serves very good food and has excellent service. There is also a Japanese restaurant but we didn't go there, I heard it was great.

The casino is a medium sized one, typical of the hotel ones on this island. Not bad, especially when I won back all my losses and some on the last night. ;-)

We walked up and down the beach at night and the other hotels seemed to have a better night life then the wyndham.

The rest of the island was a little different then I imagined. The main town has a big shopping district but be warned, a lot of stores close at 6. Some areas look trashy but I guess you can expect that anywhere. It is a dessert island, no natural rivers or lakes as I understand it. A jeep tour will let you see all of the island in half a day. It's interesting but all in all, I'd rather just be on the beach. ;-)

I think I could go back to aruba but I would really have to stay at a different hotel. And stay longer the 5 nights, that just isn't enough time.

Re: wyndham experience

We have stayed at Hyatt, Radisson, and now stay exclusively at Wyndham, We love it. It is clean, service is great, and no mold. We leave Tuesday for 2 weeks. Casino is great, service is great, food is great, pool is great, room is spotless, and I am picky picky picky!! SO , FOR the record, I dont know what you are use to, but I dont want other 'Wyndham hopefuls, to be discouraged?? We get, down comforters on our bed, down pillows, if there is anything missing from our room, one phone call, and its settled.. I just returned from a 600 dollar a night hotel in Maui, and this Wyndham has them beat hands down.. So, I do think you may want some cheese with that whine!! no offense, but to us, and we have been returning for YEARS<<< its great.. and I have some of the fussiest taste around. I work in the medical profession, so you cant be clean enough, fast enough, safe enough, spotless enough, or sanitary enough for me, and my family, but this Wyndham, passes my rigid exams!! Sorry you didnt like it,,May I suggest giving them another try!! You will not find a finer place to stay with a better staff anywhere. sincerely, M, Oring

Re: wyndham experience

Mike - it isn't just you. There are literally hundreds of recent poor reviews on the Wyndham Aruba on various travel boards - obviously their service is VERY inconsistent and some people just want certain things when paying the prices the Wyndham charges. And we have that right.

The guy who commented about "whining" - is obviously CLUELESS.

My trip to the Wyndham back in August was HORRIBLE! Service was very lacking - meaning people were rude, angry and argumentative! Our bathroom ceiling leaked for days after the Wyndham repeatedly tried to fix it - and because we didn't want to complain we did not ASK for a new room.

Their all inclusive was PATHETIC and they closed several of the restaurants we were suppose to dine at during our stay - when we arrived.

The room was moldy, carpets were soiled and had wet spots on them when we checked in. The maids never removed dirty dishes so we put them out in the hallway - which made for a nice appearance (not) and UNSAFE hallway!

The pool was dirty and both the beach and pool were ridiculously windy - anyone who says the other hotels down the strip are just as windy - are bonkers. The difference in wind is unbelievable, that alone would prompt us to stay somewhere else upon our return.

Everyone says you get what you pay for - and next time we will spend a few more dollars and go for a much more upscale property for sure!

Re: wyndham experience

Did you call the beach office to have them turn off the wind? Have you heard of the tradewinds?

Re: wyndham experience

Hey Sally - You are some comedian! Any chance you LOOK like Roseanne Barr?

We knew ALL about the lovely tradewinds before departing for beautiful Aruba. Sorry - these were not tradewinds, they were very strong GUSTS of wind. Ever hear of a hurricane? The Wyndhams LOCATION coupled with the weather out at sea can change the "tradewinds" to heavy winds at any time.

Thanks for your intelligent remark Roseann - I mean Sally. Please continue to share such worthwhile remarks with this message board!

Re: wyndham experience

My fiance and I were at the Wyndham for 9 days back in September - we would never return to that resort again. We felt they had a lot of nerve charging what they did based on the condition of our room, the lousy/unfriendly service, poor room cleaning, & lastly we too paid a nice sum of money for the all inclusive only to find the restaurants were closed when we arrived. When we returned home and questioned our travel agent, she said Wyndham never notified ANY of the travel industry. So all that money was down the tubes.

I don't seem to read such stories about the Radisson, Marriott and Hyatt. Infact the ONLY thing it seems the Wyndham has going for it versus the others - is their balconies. And trust me - for the amount of time we were out on our balcony we would gladly trade that for a better time at some of the more upscale resorts!

Live and learn. Next time we will know!
