Invitation to Walk the Aruba Peace Labyrinth on the International Day of Peace, September 21st, 2010

Category Arts & Culture     Date Friday, September 17th, 2010

The labyrinth is a pattern and a symbol passed down through the centuries dating back over 4,000 years. The design describes a meandering path that leads from the outside into the center and back out again. The Aruba Peace Labyrinth, dedicated on September 18, 2005, is known as an eleven circuit Chartres style labyrinth, an exact replica of the labyrinth at Chartres Cathedral in France. Its distinguishing features are: 11 circuits, the turns arranged in four quadrants, and a 6-petal rosette in the center.

Walking a labyrinth helps quiet the mind, open the soul and evokes feelings of wholeness and unity. Modern pilgrims walk the labyrinthine path as a tool to enhance prayer, contemplation, meditation, and/or personal growth.

Aqua Grill Earns the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for the Second Year in a Row

Category Cuisine     Date Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

The island’s chic and hip seafood address is Aqua Grill in Palm Beach. Critically praised for its fresh-only philosophy and culinary diversity that brings patrons both regional classic preparations, as well as an exciting contemporary flair to seafood cuisine, Aqua Grill recently earned its second Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for an impressive wine cellar of over 1000 bottles, with a selection from more than 100 different wines.

The elite few restaurants that qualify for this award must meet a variety of standards, most important being their wine selection. Aqua Grill management carefully selects wines with diversity—region- and grape-wise—in mind. Much time is spent researching the reputation of many vineyards, meeting with the restaurant’s wine distributors, and then fine-tuning the list through staff wine tastings, current market trends, and global sales performance.

The wines are stored behind a fourteen-foot tall glass wine wall that doubles as part of the dynamic décor of the restaurant. The temperature-controlled wine cellar has a capacity to hold over 1000 viewed bottles, and all red wines are stored room temperature (70°), while white wines are stored at 50°.

Aqua Grill is open nightly. For more information and to make reservations call 586-5900. Pictured here is the main dining room which houses the glass wine vault storing the selections that helped earn Aqua Grill its Wine Spectator Award of Excellence.

Tuscany Residence Aruba Gearing Up For Construction

Category General News     Date Friday, September 10th, 2010

Now is a great time to invest!

While the world is recovering from the recent economic decline, Aruba’s real estate market continues to offer great investment opportunities to those prepared to take the plunge, and go ahead and live their dreams.

One of the newest, most exciting projects is Tuscany Residence Aruba, which recently captured headlines as it announced construction of a low-density gated community just across the island’s much-anticipated Ritz Carlton, now under construction.

The sizeable property destined to become Tuscany Residence Aruba was just recently razed and is presently being nicely fenced in preparation for a model-home construction, scheduled to start in November, to conclude in the summer of 2011.

Tuscany Residence Aruba is the initiative of a Dutch group of investors, Esprit Project Development, in collaboration with the local Toscana Development NV.

The partnership produced an impressive design for a master-planned community with free-standing homes, stylish condos and tasteful townhouses sharing upscale, fully landscaped community pools and tropical gardens, a fitness center, a chic club-house, a gourmet restaurant, bar and ample parking, in a secure, exclusive, family friendly enclave.

Director of Sales Erick Munnikhuis is especially proud of the new technology which will be introduced here for the first time at Tuscany Residence Aruba. All homes, he explains, will be equipped with superb, digitally controlled, energy efficient air-conditioning units. Tuscany Residence Aruba will keep its energy consumption down by virtue of the double glazing on its glass windows and doors, and further keep the temperatures low via misting systems, installed on all terraces. The complex will be keyless, Munnikhuis states, relying on a secure, smart, entry system. And all materials used in building construction and interior decor will adhere to strict European standards, and to consistent quality controls.

Munnikhuis is no stranger to Aruba. Over the past decade the dynamic hotelier has enjoyed two successful stints on the island, first as sales executive and later as sales manager for the Marriott Vacation Club overseeing the sales of the Surf Club in its start-up days and returning later to the project to finish it up.

Throughout his career, Munnikhuis who was trained as a fighter pilot in the Dutch air-force, contributed to the development of successful projects for the prestigious Marriott Vacation Club concept in Marbella, Spain, London, England, Paris, France and Phuket, Thailand. In his capacity as director for Sol Melia he orchestrated projects in the Canary Islands and the Dominican Republic. His life reads like a story book, but he confidently declares that Aruba with its clever blend of American, European and Latin cultures is among the best places on earth, providing an excellent quality of life to residents and visitors, and true to his philosophy Munnikhuis proudly points out the exact location of his dream-house, to be constructed within the boundaries of Tuscany Residence Aruba, in 2011.

Munnikhuis recruited a strong and vibrant sales-team to help spread the word around that Tuscany Residence Aruba is about to capture the market, in the $310k to $750k range with a quality product that is unique and affordable.

Sales Executive Oscar Janga’s background is surprisingly similar to that of Munnikhuis having worked for the Marriott Vacation Club for six year, as well as for Costa Linda Beach Resort in its successful heyday. Oscar, a Flight Instructor by profession was trained in the USA, and was a proud pilot for Air Aruba when the fondly-remembered airline serviced Aruba’s many destinations in the 90s. Flying for Air Aruba for more than 7 years prepared Oscar for his Tuscany Residence Aruba assignment, appreciating the boutique feel and the intimate Mediterranean atmosphere offered by the development’s 153 homes, away from mass overcrowding, favoring the small to medium growth over dense expansion.

Sales Executive Marisol Quijada brings her quadric-lingual sales experience to work everyday. With an extensive sales and marketing background Marisol is in possession of an in-depth understanding of the local and Latin markets. She was recruited to the project by Munnikhuis who immediately recognized her excellent people skills and her quiet and assured presence.

Sales Executive Raquel Eman, a local entrepreneur is also a member of the sales team. She recently joined Tuscany Residence Aruba focusing on customer service and long-term relationships with prospective clients. While the sales gallery will remain at the South Beach Centre, she explains, clients will be able to tour the project, with members of the sales team, to observe construction progress and to keep up with new developments.

The welcome committee of Tuscany Residence Aruba is made up of two charming individuals, Carina Zimmerman and Adriani Moebin, fluent in multiple languages, and blessed with enthusiasm and rich and varied sales experience, in retail and in timeshare.

No wonder that Tuscany Residence Aruba has enjoyed an unprecedented reception, and indications are that this trend will continue through the sell-out phase of the project.

Erick, Marisol, Raquel, Carina & Adriani promise visitors the best coffee north of the equator as well as tireless efforts to help visitors choose the right home, and assist them with financing and paperwork to successfully bring the deal to the Notary’s office for signature, as there are not restrictions on real estate purchases in Aruba, and visitors do not need to become residents to own property here.

Cas di Glas Under Construction

Category General News     Date Friday, September 10th, 2010

This is the fourth column about the Cas di Glas (House of Glass), an event that takes place from September 29 thru October 3 in the Renaissance Marketplace across from CILO City Lounge. It is a concept that, after its immense success in Holland, has been copied in various big cities in Europe. Its goal: to get a substantial amount of money for a good cause; on Aruba this will be the Koningin Wilhelmina Kankerfonds (KWF), the cancer foundation. But what is the Cas di Glas exactly and how does something like that come about? In the coming installments you will be able to follow the making of the Cas di Glas and we hope you will get as enthusiastic about this project as its team of organizers.

Quite a large number of hotels, businesses, stores and restaurants have been brought up-to-date about what Cas di Glas is all about, and what will be done with the money that the fundraising event will generate. And now the ball is in their court. Because the idea is that everyone will start their own private projects to raise money for a mobile breast screening unit for Aruba, the great goal of the happening. This may be done through donating part of the daily tip money, like what the staffers of CILO City Lounge are doing. From the beginning of this month, they have put AWG. 50,– into a special Cas di Glas container; on October 3rd, the final day of the Cas di Glas, the total will be donated. Another example is the hotel concierge, who has contacted the rental car companies that he works with, and he has asked them to donate one dollar a day per rented car. We have also heard about hotel employees who are organizing projects of their own. Super!

Setar and Digicel have jumped in full-heartedly: there is an SMS number (222 for Setar and 2222 for Digicel) that donates one florin per SMS to Cas di Glas and both companies have already promised an extra amount of money on top of that. Aruba Aloe will have its Aloe girls present during the sports demonstrations in the Arena on the Cas di Glas parking lot; the company is making use of the opportunity of lots of media coverage to introduce its 100-factor sunscreen lotion. KLM Martinair as well as American Airlines have donated tickets to fly international artists and deejays to Aruba and KLM Martinair stewardesses will come to help out on Kids’ Day; they will be wearing their uniforms! On the same day, Saturday, October 2, the fire brigade, the police will show their special equipment so that children may be able to take a close look at them; maybe they can even make a ride in them. Checkpoint color will be there to take photographs – these will be sold for the Cas di Glas project. And we have heard through the grapevine that Princess Maxima of the Netherlands might be able to close our Cas di Glas project via videoconferencing… Wow!

Time flies and there is still so much to do! Fortunately a lot has been crossed off as well: the Cas di Glas on the trailer is finished; it will be transported to the parking lot across from the Cinemas at the Renaissance Marketplace during the last week of September. Then the air conditioning will be installed. The artists and groups have been confirmed, the interviews have been scheduled, the information booths have been confirmed and the arena for the sports demonstrations with the boarding for the sponsor banners and boards is almost ready to be put in its eye-catching place. There is also a lot of enthusiasm for Zumba and the Kids’ Day. In short: the excitement is building!

Thrilling Any Crowd, Super DJ André Rouzo Will Make Cas di Glas Tremble – Friday, October 1, 2010

Category Entertainment, Happenings     Date Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

DJ Andé Rouzo from Miami, Florida, is not nicknamed `The future of music’ for nothing. His exceptional talent and energy level have made him a top performer in his field. And he is coming to Aruba to make the Cas di Glas at CILO City Lounge tremble. Rouzo will be on stage on Friday, October 1, making his fans crazy. The Cas di Glas event, which is a fundraising happening for the Koningin Wilhelmina Kankerfonds, is held from September 29 thru October 3. André Rouzo is one of the headliners of the four-day event; American Airlines is the gracious sponsor of his ticket.

Rouzo’s career started early: since age 11 he has played the trumpet, becoming so proficient that he played in world-renowned bands, jazz ensembles and orchestras. During his career as a trumpeter he played in over 200 cities in the United States.

André Rouzo stepped out of his life as a musician to pursue his passion for electronic music in 2003 and, making good use of his 14 years of experience, he utilized his skills and focused on dj-ing and music production. In 2007 Rouzo landed his first residency as a dj at Armani Exchange, becoming one of the most popular official dj’s in the US. In March 2008 André made history performing at the World Famous Club space in Miami.

In the past two years the passionate performer has shared stages with great names like David Solano, RiotGear, Starkiller, Cato K., Granite & Phunk and Armin van Buuren, making a name for himself as a world-class dj. André is greatly looking forward to coming to Aruba to play his music for the Cas di Glas crowd; like every other artist he is donating his performance free of charge in the hope to help raise money for the mobile breast cancer screening unit that is the goal of the Cas di Glas project.

Food, Wine and Fun at the Aruba Culinary Festival

Category Cuisine, Happenings     Date Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

The first installment of the Aruba Culinary Festival, an exciting taste of Aruba and cultural experience, was a smashing success! Taking place on Monday night, September 6, at the scenic outdoor plaza of Divi Links, more than 250 locals and tourists were wowed by this unique evening. A collaborative effort of the Aruba Gastronomic Association and Divi Resorts, this is the perfect formula for food, wine and fun!

There were unanimous rave reviews about the food and wine. The eclectic menu included abundant, exquisitely prepared signature dishes courtesy of restaurants of the Aruba Gastronomic Association and Divi Resorts. Amazonia’s perfectly-cooked chicken breast, sausage and filet mignon skewers were served right off the grill; Aqua Grill’s Chesapeake crab cakes with grain mustard sauce smacked of New England. Driftwood’s fresh catch of the day in Creole sauce and garlic sauce, caught by the owner himself, was served with pan bati (local corn bread).

The Manchebo Beach Resort was represented by its two fine restaurants; beef stroganoff, a favorite with diners at the French Steak House, was served with Italian focaccia bread prepared by Giorgio’s. Gasparito prepared two tasty versions of the traditional Aruban dish of keshi yena, one with seafood and the other with chicken. Mulligan’s beef tenderloin in a rich Port wine sauce was served with couscous while Windows on Aruba offered a unique trio of tuna sushi, smoked salmon with cream cheese and duck with feta cheese. La Trattoria El Faro Blanco spoiled guests with jumbo shrimp and asparagus wrapped in prosciutto ham.

The wine was flowing with Arion Wine Company’s fine Vendange Chardonnay California and Hogue Cellars Merlot (Columbia Valley Washington State), poured all night to appreciative wine lovers and perfectly accompanying the menu.

Erik van den Hengel, Food & Beverage Director, Divi Resorts, did an awesome job in working with his staff to create the perfect festival venue. The live music of Ernesto Ferro was the perfect touch, applauded by all the guests. Local artists and artisans and Aruhiba cigars lent an authentic Aruban flair while Tattoo, Mi Dushi and Kukoo Kunuku added to the fun.

Don’t miss the next Aruba Culinary Festival on Monday, October 4.

A Delicious Day on De Palm Island for Cast of D’Licious!

Category Entertainment     Date Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

On Saturday September 4th, the cast of the island’s hottest show cooled off for a day on De Palm Island. The outing was well-earned for the group which has been working hard to bring Aruba its most spectacular live stage production yet in the form of D’Licious-a two hour music and dance extravaganza presented in a cabaret-style venue called Zissles, located at Paseo Herencia Mall.

The day on De Palm Island proved to be a great team-builder for the cast who arrived in July from Europe. All the performers are thrilled with the opportunity to live and work on Aruba, and have whole-heartedly embraced the local community, and have made a great effort to explore the island and meet the people in between their demanding rehearsal and performance schedules.

The day on De Palm Island was filled with fun, and everyone took advantage of all the activities offered, including snorkeling with the famous blue parrot fish, beach volleyball, and the group’s favorite adventure-the banana boat ride! The group stayed well-nourished throughout the day with a bountiful culinary buffet and open bar.

Want to see the cast of D’Licious live, up close and personal? They perform nightly (Sunday through Friday) at Zissles, where a gourmet three-course dinner is also enjoyed during the show. Visit the website at www.zissles.com for more information and tickets.
