Island Temptations Launches Refreshed Website

On the cusp of marking ten years of publishing, the creative team at Island Temptations has refreshed their online presence with an updated website. In print, the magazine publishes 300,000 copies a year, with a readership estimated at more 750,000. The online version—the only magazine with links on Aruba’s two main search engines (Visitaruba.com and aruba.com)—attracts in excess of one million readers, reaching all corners of the globe via the island-temptations.com address.

Presented in a virtual magazine format, where browsers can flip through the pages of the magazine in its original entirety, the current issue of Island Temptations can be found, as well as two years of back issues.

Talented Participants at Marriott Carnival Queen Election – Geraldine Geerman Crowned Reina of Marriott

It’s carnival time in Aruba and Marriott like no other knows how to celebrate carnival. On February 15, 2012 the Marriott organized a Queen election. From the various departments at the three Aruba Marriott properties ten participants signed up to compete for Marriott Carnival Queen. In addition 2 male duos entered for the Prins y Pancho title.

The ten ladies who shined for the evening were: Heissi Dugarte (Market Place), Dessline Loefstop (Activities MVC), Bianela Santana (Housekeeping ASC), Aixa Albertus (Housekeeping ASC), Vicky Benavides (Recreation MVC), Leidy Rojas (Captains Galey/Pavillion), Jasmin Henriquez ( Engineering ASC), Geraldine Geerman (AYS), Yohanna Correa (FD ASC) and Christy-ann Christiaans (Accounting). The Prins and Pancho contestants were Ryan Martijn & Claudio Peña (LPO MVC) and Meldrick Solognier (Activities MVC) & Mike Rodriguez (FO AOC).

Westin’s Top of the Class for 2011 Honored

Throughout the year, top associates, supervisors, and managers of the Westin Resort & Casino, Aruba are awarded Brand Champions for their extraordinary service and dedication to guests of the resort and to their fellow colleagues. This past Tuesday, a special awards ceremony was held for these finalists in the resort’s ballroom, with a festive red-and-white Valentine’s Day theme.

The finalist were all nominees for the distinction of Associate, Manager, or Supervisor of the Year for 2011. While it is a near-impossible task to choose from among these stellar associates, a few shone extra bright.

Night Time is the Right Time for Dancing in the Streets: Tivoli Lighting Parade

The introduction of the Tivoli Lighting Parade to Aruba’s carnival schedule over 25 years ago added what is today one of the most popular events during the entire season. How better to spend a Sa­turday night than dancing in the streets with friends and family while admiring the creativity and artistry of carnival costume and float designers?

Saturday evening’s parade filled the town of Oranjestad with the driving beat of carnival music until well after midnight from 12 different bands as 3030 participants wound their way through the town, demonstrating how well they can swing their hips and shake their shoulders to the music. They had quite some competition from the spectators that lined the road.

Lynette Do Nacimiento of Champagne Carnival Group Crowned Aruba’s 58th Queen

Even after 58 years of Carnival history, the election of Aruba’s Grand Queen is still an event to rival the most elaborate and exciting of pageants. On Friday evening, February 10, a panel of judges chose Lynette Do Naci­miento as Aruba’s Carnival Queen 2012.

It was a well-deserved title, as the lovely young woman demonstrated ultimate poise and congeniality throughout the evening; however, she couldn’t resist a little victory dance after being handed her congratulatory bouquet, something very much like you would see in a football end zone, with quite a bit more wiggling of the hips.

Ancient and Modern Arts Provide an Interesting Contrast with the Opening of “Capturing Modern Hieroglyphs” at Ateliers ‘89

Ateliers ’89, the Aruban foundation and center for art and cultural education, is hosting a 2-month exposition of the works produced by their most recent classes in Raku pottery and Video, titled “Capturing Modern Hieroglyphs.”

The Raku course was taught by guest instructor Ellen Spijkstra, originally from Holland but a resident of Curacao since 1980, and the video course featured Erla Haraldsdóttir and Craniv Boyd, from Berlin, Germany as instructors, who also work extensively in Erla’s nation of birth, Iceland. Craniv is a Liberian/American born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Hyatt Regency Casino Introduces new TiTo Technology

Hyatt Regency Director of Casino Operations Ricky Tromp proudly explained the newest advances in slot gaming as Slots Manager Martin Dijkhoff demonstrated their “Ticket in Ticket out” (Tito) system, providing ease of use combined with improved hygiene.

The Hyatt has spent $6 million dollars in improvements to patron amenities in addition to the $50 million facelift and room renovations of a couple of years ago. A substantial portion has gone to the enlargement and improvement of their spa, which will officially open soon, and $1.2 Million to upgrading the gaming experience in their casino.

Arubus Schedule for this Carnaval Weekend

Arubus is offering a special schedule to facilitate islanders enjoying the events taking place over the weekend, and to relieve the stress of finding parking or being blocked in by other inconsiderate drivers. On Saturday, February 11, when the Lighting Parade is over, there will be extra busses leaving the bus station in Oranjestad to make sure that everyone can get home or to the San Nicolas bus station safely, particularly in the case of consumption of alcohol. There is nothing more pleasant after a night of partying than to sit and relax in a bus and go home without having to bother with the traffic or people driving irresponsibly. Arubus has experienced and conscientious drivers, capable of bringing everyone safely to their destination.

Generous Donation By Artist Grace Ashruf

Local artist Grace Ashruf held a succesfull one-woman Art Exhibition ‘Destination’ in October last year for two weeks in the old Toyota Building (sponsored by Garage Cordia) at the LG Smith Blvd 114, with a collection of 30 large paintings. Many of these artworks went to local and international collectors of contemporary art.

Grace generously promised again to donate a percentage of sales, this time to Children’s home Casa Cuna in Aruba. Recently, Corina Linssen, Director of the home, accepted a generous check from the artist in presence of Astrid Muller. Casa Cuna surprised the artist Grace Ashruf with a beautiful thank you painting, created with colorfull prints of the little hands and feet of all the children residing in Casa Cuna. In 2009 Grace donated in the same way part of her proceeds to Kinderhuis Imeldahof. One of her art collectors added an extra amount to the donation, Just like in 2009,

Minister of Tourism & ATA Unveil New Tents to Replace Trailers on L.G. Smith Blvd

Minister of Tourism, Transport & Labor, Otmar Oduber, was joined by staffers of the Aruba Tourism Authority, ATA, and the Department of Public Works, DOW, in the formal introduction of the new canopies provided by the government which will be used during Carnival time, instead of the usual trailers put up by those who have won a place on L.G. Boulevard during the annual lottery.

Presently, the Department of Public Works is working steadily to complete the first phase of the Linear Park and the trailers would provide a serious impediment to their efforts. The government has obtained 121 sturdy and spacious canopies located along L. G. Smith Boulevard which lottery winners can rent for the remainder of the Carnival season.
