Archbishop Desmond Tutu Arrives on May 9th to Honor Local Aruban

Archbishop Desmond Tutu will participate in a gala event as a special guest speaker at the Seaport Conference Center in Aruba. This event is unprecedented as it will be the first time in Aruba history that an Archbishop comes to the island.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1984, Tutu fought for equality and justice during the Nelson Mandela incarceration. Tutu, a unifying leader, was given international recognition for his continuing plight for unity among black and white South Africans in order to bring their country out of conflict and crisis. Tutu is expected to speak on justice and peace throughout the world especially during these difficult times.

At the gala, there will be a ceremony in which Tutu will honor fellow humanitarian, Paul Melrose Chase. A valued member of the community, Chase is involved with various organizations around the island including the YMCA, Planned Parenthood and Casa Cuna, a home for underprivileged children.

“We are honored to have Archbishop Desmond Tutu come and visit our island,” said Edison Briesen, Aruba’s minister of tourism and transportation. “He is an inspiration to the people of Aruba for all his efforts in obtaining peace and equality throughout the world.”
