Thanks for the reassurance. Will stop by. I don't care for Kay Jeweler's at all in the States.

We have had excellent service from Shiva's, located in Royal PLaza and also Touch of Gold located across the street directly behind Royal Plaza.

we visit Kay's everytime we have been to Aruba; Ash is wonderful and seems to remember you each time you come in. Maybe that is just a good salesman that can pass that off!!!
You have to be careful at any jewelry store you purchase from. We have one locally owned at home that we do business with and you can really see the difference, especially in diamonds, when you are looking through the magnifier at the shops. I will buy colored stones etc, but probably not diamonds. Maybe diamond earrings, but nothing larger than that. THere is a difference.

But Ash is handsome enough to make you want to just buy something from him!!

Hello Everyone,

I'm from Elma NY and Ash from Kay's was my department head's sons roomate at Providence. He knows his business, and perhaps he will give you a discount if you tell him Mrs.DuBois from Iroquois Central sent you. He sold my son an engagement ring and right now we could sell it for a much higher price. Say hi from MR. Fris!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's my boss. Shear quality.

Best regards,

Susan

My friends and I will soon be making our 5th trip to Aruba. The first two years we bought at Noble's Jewelry. Very pleasant people, but a bit pricey. While walking along a back street, we discovered Larry's Fine Jewelry. Not only was the jewelry more in line with our tastes, but the prices were much cheaper. Larry and his family are extremely trustworthy and accomodating. They will knock themselves out to please their customers. We can't wait to go back!

Hey, I wouldn't buy anything from Noble. I bought a ring there two years ago when we were there. The day we were leaving Aruba, lost a ruby out of it. My husband took it down and they "repaired" it. Not so much! Got home, the same night, stone was gone again! Sent it out, my friends parents were there so they picked it up for me and brought it back. Again, stone fell out! I sent it back and got my money back. Also, they were very sneaky saying they never go it back through the mail the final time, however, I had it insured so I know they got it!
Just a heads up!

I have bought for years at Kay's. Had the items appraised at home and I paid what they were worth. I have picked up some very pretty semi precious stone pieces. I have dealt with Joe for years.
It seems that Kay's is the name that keeps coming up.

re: kays

my mom died a few years ago
she had always promised to give me her wedding band
she had also promised to give my niece her wedding band

neither of us were unwilling to yield to the other:o

during a trip into kays i gave andy the wedding band
it was a plain platinum band with engraving on the inside

andy had an exact duplicate made both rings sized 6.75
when i went to pick it up, it was undecipherable which was which.

he only charged me $75

i told my niece what i had done
put both rings in a hat, she drew first

each of us now are wearing mom's ring......or so we think

Its on the main drag set back, and has a parking lot in front of it. I would say its directly across the street from The Paddock, but i'm thinking its more across the street from the huts....Make sence?

its in the back of the parking lot between the Tommy Hilfiger store and the Crystal Casino. If you see JOE, tell him Randi sent you! Joe is one of the owners, he is very nice.

My wife and I have been visiting Aruba for over 30 years, every single year. Every year we want to stay longer so for the last 10 years we spend our winters in Aruba, usually 5-6 weeks. We LOVE the people, the restaurants, the waters and beaches. We are sold on Aruba.
But unfortunately when a gem like Aruba starts to get over built and over commercialized you have the less trustworthy merchants moving onto the Island.
We have never ever had a problem with anything we purchased until this past vacation when we made a large purchase from Little Europe. As anniversary present I bought my wife earring and a new engagement ring. Of course the salesman stated it will be appraised for more than you paid etc etc. Any problem we have a service center in New York etc etc.
Well by the time we arrived home the stones were falling out of the ring, we brought it to our local jeweler who appraised it at a much less than we paid, and he said the quality of the setting and the workmanship was very inferior and the ring will continually loose the stones. I tried numerous times to speak to the owner of the store, Little Europe, but of course - not available. Service center in New York-non existent. When I finally spoke to a salesman he don't worry when you come back next year we will "exchange" it for you.
The way Little Europe and Times Square do business they probably won't be in business next year
Buyer Beware and STAY AWAY from Little Europe and Times Square frequent a store that has been on the island longer and doesn't call you "brother" when he first meets you.

Beware of Little Europe Jewelry Store Oranjestad Aruba
and Times Square in Palm Beach Aruba

Another vote for Royal. We were introduced to them by our friends who have been buying from them for 16-18 years. We have bought several pieces from my wife and she loves their stuff. I'm happy with their prices. We think they are good people who take good care of you after the sale.

I would recommend Kay's Fine Jewelry (not affiliated with the American chain that has the jingle every kiss begins with Kay). They have 2 shops - Oranjestad and Palm Beach in Aruba, a couple on other Caribbean islands, and 1 in Myrtle Beach, SC. I purchased a watch from them at the Oranjestad store and my wife was interested in some Tazanite earrings which were priced at about $2800. We walked into their store about 15 minutes before they closed and my wife wanted to think about the earrings so we didn't get them at that moment. We decided to go look around the shops at Palm Beach and found the second Kay store. While she was looking at the earrings again I was looking at another watch that I didn't need. I am not a big spender and I had never owned a watch that cost more than $30 until that night when I purchased the first watch. I really liked a watch that was listed for $275. I was not going to buy it since I just bought one no more than 2 hours earlier. My wife started haggling with the salesman and got the price of the earrings down to about $1400. She still wasn't sure if she wanted to spend that kind of money. We had been talking with the owner's son and he came over and said he would make us a great deal. (I wish I could remember his name.) Anyway, he told us he would give her the earrings for $950 and throw in the $275 watch for free. Needlessly to say, my wife has a great pair of earrings and I now have two watches. We spent about $1100 for $3200 (retail price). This goes along with what we had about most jewelry being marked up about 300%. The son and his sales people were very nice. While we were shopping, they offered us water and adult beverages. We had a good experience, got a good deal, and would definitely go back and shop with them. We will be going to the Myrtle Beach location here shortly.

Well, now I know why people recommend Kay's in Aruba. I always thought it was part of the Kay's chain in the U.S.

Don't go to the gold palace--it is a tourist trap, Owner will take you for as much as he can get.

i have dealt with touch of gold over and over for years. we have such a great relationship with them my husband has ordered stuff from them from home. every piece has superior stones and is made beautifully. i have NEVER had any issues with their jewelry. they have always been wonderful and trustworthy to deal with.

on a few occasions......(not me..lol) my family has also bought from the wonderful people at kays. hubby and son....yes my 16 yr old son buys jewelry...also beautifully made and wonderful to deal with. always a fair price.

i also....and for the life of me i cannot think of which jeweler it was...small store not far from touch of gold....found a pair of sterling silver and blue topaz earrings i loved. not a huge purchase but loved these earrings. bought them and the sales girl packed them up.....went to wear them that night....and i was missing a piece of the earing.(1 piece went in your ear then the 2nd piece with the stone dangled from it) they were already closed and the following day we were leaving....and it was sunday....stores all closed....so i called when i got home and he immediately sent a new piece.....which somehow got sent to the wrong person....lol...when i called back to say i never recieved it....they had the wrong address....he immediately sent another!!! and was so apologetic....i told him no problem....i just really wanted to wear them!!! i got it in a few days and thanked him and all was good.....i will find the name of the store because he went above and beyond.

We usually deal with Kay's. Like family, they come running when we stop in. Purchased diamond earrings, tennis bracelet, lots of earrings. Oh my, hate bragging SO please don't take this the wrong way. Quality is good, service fast, repairs done while on the island or while we wait!! Love getting a cold soda or beer while we wait to.

got DD pearls at that Pearl store downtown( Pearl Gens) the mall under Iguana Joes. The service, quality and knowledge there was fantastic. The Pearl asst they have is fantastic, the owner, a woman couldn't have been nicer. She helped pick out the right shade of Pearls for our daughter, added a gorgeous clasp and had them ready quickly. The quality was as great as my Mikki's. Graduation gift time.

not planning on hitting any stores for jewelry in Sept, I NEED nothing.

Don't forget to negotiate, negotiate, negotiate. On "all gold" items (no gems) pay between 33 and 38 percent of tagged price unless it is truly a piece of artwork.

Interesting. I would've thought there would be manoeuvre room on emeralds given the proximity to South America.

They move on most anything at most every store (I believe that Little Switzerland is an exception). I mentioned gold because the percent is the easiest to predict, it's value being based on weight. However, pearls, gemstone earrings, watches, negotiate markdowns on all of them. When you ask for a price and they give you one, my approach is to then ask for the real selling price. Then I look over the piece carefully, ponder, and ask for a greater markdown. Sometimes I'll make an offer, sometimes I'll simply ask for them to come down more. Frequently, I'll ask for the person in charge to come over and give me their best price. You can typically get the best if you ask for owner or manager.......at least that is my approach and experience.

i would love to hear from others.

There are so many jewelry shops in Aruba!! I always end up at Kay's because I get pretty good deals there and I don't have the energy to walk all over to compare prices. I know they are cheaper than the states because of no sales tax. Kay's has a good selection of man made colored stones. I didn't shop last year so I will definitely hit Kay's this month.

We have purchased jewelry at a number of places. I haven't seen anyone mention "Artistic". Not a dedicated jewelry store as they have many other items, but they have some unique items. My first purchase from them was a stack ring back in the early 90s. We were young and not good hagglers, but it appraised for double the price. . It is sapphire, emerald and ruby with a diamond jacket. This past June I was looking for simpler items (Pandora bead, silver palm tree pendant). Artistic downtown had a bead and a silver pendant, but I wanted to look around. When I eventually went back to get just the bead, the nice lady gave me the silver palm tree pendant. Not a huge cost on their part, but will keep me as a customer.

Also, we have had good results with Effy and a the jewelry store in the back of the parking lot across from the flea market downtown (anybody know what I'm talking about? maybe it's Kays?) Anyhow, the Aruba Nights books and other tourist flyers sometimes offer "free" stones at Effy. My teenagers eat that stuff up. My son got his girlfriend "free" earrings and matching pendant (the settings are crappy but the stones are nice) and my daughter collected a few of the gem stones and had them set here at home. Now granted, they are not top quality but the sales staff was always kind to the kids, and we did purchase a titanium ring for my DH at one stop.

No one has said anything about Colombian Emeralds. Does anyone have any comments? For our 25th anniversary my husband gave me a Colombian Emeralds bag (that my daughter had horded since our last trip:D) and said we will take a visit to the store on our April visit to pick something out. I told him start saving up!!

the store in the back of the parking lot is Kay's. Not to be mistaken for the Kay's in the US, they are a family run business throughout the Caribbean. We have used them for years.

I have bought all of my high end jewelry....diamonds...blue diamonds...emeralds.....at Touch of Gold. They have ALWAYS been incredible to deal with!! and more importantly they stand behind everything they sell. we have even( well, hubby did) bought stuff from new jersey and had them ship it to us!! amazing jewelry and different pieces!! I have also used kays for more everyday type jewelry. but my first stop is always touch of gold.
