Bring lots of sunscreen with you. The price of it goes up dramatically in aruba.
Some to the tune of $5-7.oo per bottle. Don't forget the aloe, chapstick, and #'s 15-45 for a good asst. of sunscreen. One year on our flight home a newly married young couple was stretched out in 3 seats, reason....got so sun-burnt he needed the room and couldn't sit cramped in one seat....beware.....

SPF 30 or higher is a must for me. We have been fortunate to never suffer from sunburn while enjoying our time in Aruba.

I used to get heat rashes and sun poisoning from other lotions and this has finally been a lotion from which I have had no reactions. I love Aruba Aloe products and do use them at home, unfortunately had a bad reaction from their sunscreen as well. :(

Dd was using this Coppertone Oil Free SPF 48 and began suffering red rashes. After a little research I discovered that this is sometimes caused by too high of an SPF. Switched her down to SPF 30 and this past trip she was fine. Now the biggest challenge, getting her to reapply frequently. For the 3 of us I usually plan on 1 bottle for every 2 days.

I remember on our 2nd trip to Aruba my 100% Italian husband wouldn't listen to me about the suntan lotion! I kept applying applying and applying and had a beautiful tan...him well he got burnt and we had to eat room service that night cause he had the chills and couldn't even get dressed. We were staying at the Rad and I took a pictue of him lying on the bed with one of their stark white robes on...Its quite funny, everyone who sees the picture swears its not him. HE IS BLACK in the picture! His sunburns never are actually red for some reason. And all you see is the pink bottoms of his feet and his white teeth! I have the pictures on our frig. at home.

Kids get really mad at me for being a pest about lotion while in Aruba, my fav. saying is "Hey we're only 400 miles from the Equator" (don't know if that's accurate but it works).

Absolutely! My wife and myself will go tanning a few times before we go to establish a nice base tan. When we are there we use a 30, it works out perfectly. The tan lasts for a while when we get back.

the wind could have been a factor and not enough got applied.

start out the day by spraying yourself before you put on your bathingsuit.

if you look at the first ingredient of the spray aerosols it is ALCOHOL, which is very drying and really not good for your skin.

the lotions or creams do provide good coverage.

we start out by a spray down and then adding an spf lotion during the day.

Applying Sunscreen Properly
Most people use sunscreen improperly by not applying enough. They apply only 25% to 50% of the recommended amount. Sunscreen should be applied liberally enough to all sun-exposed areas that it forms a film when initially applied. It takes 20-30 minutes for sunscreen to be absorbed by the skin, so it should be applied at least a half an hour before going out in the sun. Sunscreen should also be the last product applied especially on the face since some sunscreens can break down in the presence of water contained in water-based foundations and moisturizers.

Reapplying Sunscreen
Most instructions on sunscreen labels recommend reapplying sunscreen "frequently", but the definition of "frequently" is vague. A common instruction is to reapply sunscreen after 2-4 hours in the sun. However, one study has shown that reapplying sunscreen 20 to 30 minutes after being in the sun is more effective than waiting 2 hours. It is possible that this time period is more effective because most people do not apply enough sunscreen initially, and this second application approximates the actual amount needed. Sunscreen should also be reapplied after swimming, excessive sweating, or toweling.

Sunscreen and Insect Repellents
Insect repellents reduce the sunscreen's SPF by up to one-third. When using sunscreen and insect repellent together, a higher SPF should be used and reapplied more often.

paul and i are heading to the pool in ah hour and i just sprayed myself.

i spray myself in the bathrooms and never seem to notice any mess.

I tried everything under the sun (haha) and learned to be very careful. I'm not a fair person, I'm Italian and have darker skin than many. This only happened in Aruba - I'm not sure why. A few years ago, Eucerin came out with an ad that said, "if you were meant to have bumps when you're in the sun, God would have made you a raspberry", lol. It was like they were talking to ME. They said to start using the stuff 2-3 DAYS before you started sitting in the sun to build up the SPF on your skin. So everyday after my shower, I'd apply a light amount especially on my "bump-prone" areas. And it worked like a charm. I was bumpless the entire 3 weeks in Aruba. It was the best stuff ever, Eucerin Daily Defense, SPF 30. Of course, after that year I couldn't find it anymore, anywhere. But I use the same principle of starting to apply it days before our trip, and it seems to work with any sunscreen. Just thought I'd share.

Ro, I have been using Eucerin face cream for years as I have sensitive skin as well.

Interesting conversations about sunscreen....I tried the spray-on, but it goes empty so quickly that I would go broke if I had to buy enough to last 3 weeks in Aruba, so I generally buy a 30spf oil free for the first few days and then I have to admit I go to the oil based spray of 8 or 4...m'bad....I know someday I will be sorry for this....might have to consider sticking with at least a 15 during my stay so I tan but do not turn into leatherlady !!!!
oh, and the reason I actually decided to put my 2cents in....(I get so distracted..:doh:...) 2 years ago I was having a serious problem everytime I went into the sun...I'd put on sunscreen but after about 1/2 hour in the sun I would feel like I was on fire and start to get itchy....took 2-3 days before I figured out I was on my last few days of an antibiotic and it was the cause of all my troubles.......so just wanted to put that out there incase somebody doesnt realize you cant be in the sun with these meds.....:D.please check with dr before going on vacation if he has you on antibiotics.....:eek:

We are heading down in a little more than a week, I have been reading the side effects of my RA meds and sensitivity to the sun is one they both share.... I have a darker complexion and love the tanned look. I had experienced the red bumps in the DR the first year we went and just thought it was because the sun is stronger there. so I will try putting sunscreen on a couple of days before we go just in case.:behappy:

i bought some and their moisturizing lotion a few months ago and it has a 30 spf.
long story short.........i left it on the table poolside here where i live, someone picked it up and intended to give it back to me. well, between the holidays and what not, she did not give it back.........

i ran into her at water aerobics the other day and she raved about it as a perfect sunblock.........she still gets a great tan and the lotion is perfect and no red bumps. apparently red bumps are pretty commonplace and an issue here in florida and aruba!

then she handed me a CVS gift card to buy some more. (which i will NOT leave at the pool)

i will continue to use the aerosol spray all over but the cera ve lotion will be for my face and after sun.

You have been holding out on me! This is great information.

Suffering from some eczema, my dermatologist suggested their products and they were a God send. I can apply my medicated ointment with the moisturizer right over it.

Now off to FB them and request a daily lotion with spf 30.

As an added note. As you can see in my avatar, dd is very fair skinned. We always had her use spf 50 in Aruba. Then she began breaking out in a rash with a few lumps and bumps. Doing some research through "Dr. Google" I found the suggestion that the SPF might be TOO HIGH. The next trip she only used SPF 30 and not only was she fine, but no lumps and bumps or rash.

i have an autoimmune disease of the sweat glands. blocked pores are my enemy. any lotions, creams, bases or screens with oil in them are forbidden so these items really are important to me. besides which, my entire family rashes and red bumps itself to itchy madness with almost anything on the market today. i checked out reviews a bit today and here's an interesting ratings link.

Those red itchy bumps are a result of sun poisoning accroding to my dermotologist. I got burned 16 yrs ago in the FL Keyes...I know have a reaction to hot water, hot tubs, the sun etc..even if I get overheated I break out in these bumps.. I must blcok using 50 spf if I'm going to be in the sun. I have a topical presciption called temovate cream thats controls the itch and soothes the bumps!!

I've only had this issue once, and it happened when I was in Las Vegas in August, after a long day of walking up and down the strip. I came down with a painful, itchy rash only on my lower legs. My husband and I happened to notice a few other people with the same rash. I couldn't imagine what I had, so when we got back to our hotel room, I Googled my symptoms..of course. I found that I had a case of Leg Heat Rash aka "Golfer's Vasculitis". In case someone else comes down with it, I thought I'd add it to the mix of heat related rashes.

Sun and heat exposure can be very sneaky in Aruba. The trade winds are so cooling, one can sometimes be lulled into a false sense of security. During our first trip to Aruba, we saw a lady being wheeled off on a stretcher from our pool by paramedics after suffering a heat stroke, so that understandably made a big impression on us.

Neither my husband nor I are particularly prone to burning, but we're still very cautious. We use 30 spf sunblock lotion prior to going out. Stay mostly under the palapa, and use the spray for quick touch ups. We put on a second layer of lotion sometime during the day because I feel like it gives better protection than the spray. The only time we got burned (except in '84 when my Italian husband who'd never had a burn a day in his life used oil after a couple of days, which lead to one day of being red as a lobster) was when I bought store brand sunscreen. It was supposed to be 30 spf, but the day we used it, we both got a bright pink. Never again will I take store brand sun screen to Aruba.

we have pretty much stopped using the aerosol SPF.
it is way too drying, even banana boat "lotion" spray spf 50.
alcohol is in every aerosol product and just way too drying.

for the amount that we use, we have now swapped out to NO AD #30
for noses, foreheads and ears.
No AD# 15 for the rest of our sun exposed bods.

They used to have cheaper Arhba Aloe stuff but now its the same prices as hotels etc.

Aside from my father and I, the rest of my family is very fair-skinned so we have to pack a lot of sunscreen. When people mention one bottle, how many oz are we talking about? I'm on amazon searching for sunscreen and I might get the Neutrogena ultra sheer for everyone but there are different oz.

Should I bring more?

i would say you probably will have enough.
if in doubt, bring 1 or 2 extra.

make certain you buy the oil free.
some times the oil is what causes the bumps.

i have been using some sunscreen on my face and i am breaking out badly.

It sounds like enough to me. :) I too use to suffer from the red bumps until I discovered the Coppertone Oil Free.

Just make sure that you apply lotion to all exposed areas- tops of hands, feet.. Even if you are wearing a hat, slather it on the face and ears.

Even on a cloudy day in Aruba, the UV rays are so strong they penetrate through the clouds and reflect off the sand and water. Been there done that :rolleyes: :doh: :mad:

Another tip...it does not happen frequently but has happened to us... the dreaded leaking bottle...
I pack each bottle separately in a Ziploc bag, squeezing out the air before sealing. I then take the separate Ziploc bags and place them in a 2 gallon Ziploc bag, again squeezing out all the air.

In case one piece of luggage is lost and because of weight restrictions, when packing I divide the lotion into 2 or 3 of those "big" packages.

Probably way more than you want to know, hopefully someone will find it useful. :)

That is a fantastic price on amazon. It has dropped in price since the beginning of the month and about as low as I have seen it anywhere. Here in Georgia for some reason the stores only carry spf 15 :rolleyes:

I fell in love with Blue Lizard sunscreen when we went to Aruba in February. It's from Austrailia and I bought it on Amazon...I am an Amazon junkie. My son was just 1 yr old and has blonde hair, blue eyes and very fair skin. He came back with a nice tan and not one hint of a burn.

We tried a new sunscreen yesterday- Hawaiin Tropic.
Good thing we tried it at home before we went to Aruba. Found this stuff to be pretty nasty.
We put in on then went and spent the day at the neighboring pool Was only out there for 1 1/2 hours. Got really burnt.
Hawaiin Tropic SPF 15. Brand new so no expired date. Could you imagine the burn we would get in Aruba if we burned like that at home.

Our carry-ons are very light, only valuables and medication.

Each bottle goes in a ziploc, push all the air out, roll and seal. Then 2 - 3 bottles go into one more ziploc so everything is double bagged. Have only had one bottle leak over the years (since 9/11/2001). Double bagging = double protection. I spread the weight out over our checked luggage.

It's not as strict as it seems to be...makes you wonder.

Rite Aid Stores have all their suntan lotions on sale ~ buy one-get one free! I went to the manufactures' websites and printed $1 coupons, and heading back to the store!

Visited my local RiteAid last night and picked up 6 bottles/cans of Suntan lotion. 2 of each SPF (we start high then slowly go down by the end of our trip). Aldis (if you have and ALDIS near you) has spray 30 and 50 SPF sunscreen on "special".

should last us thru the fall.
we spray down in the mornings before we put our bathing suits on...and spray again part way thru our daily swims.
cannot find expiration date on the ones we bought or the ones we had already at home.
maybe the aerosol spray does not expire.

bought some spf 15 lotions too.

Last December thought it was a good idea not to pack sunscreen so it would not add to the weight in the suitcase. Had to buy it there and learned a lesson. It was much much more expensive than I even imagined it would be.

Just a tidbit, I saw a news article recently that said those higher SPF sunscreens, i.e. 80, 100, are not more effective, just more expensive. Keep reapplying. Also, if it says waterproof, sweatproof, not always correct.

they only carry cranberry sauce 11 weeks a year.
i asked the manager today what is with the cranberry sauce, how come you have it this week? i bought 15 cans. he told me that some items are seasonal or limited or 1 time only.
must have to do with space or lack thereof.

the aldi brand of sunscreen we like is aerosol Little Ombre, spf 50.
i know only use 50 on my ears, shoulders and forehead . the rest of me gets 15 or nothing at all.

We have only purchased silly things at our Aldi's, things we definitely don't need...never looked in that section cause our store is really tiny. 50 if HIGH for me also who is olive(ish) in color but it doesn't hurt to have some around, especially for 1.99! (Can keep at our house for our Little Ombre's!) Thx

P.S. Bought their Baby Back Ribs about 2 weeks ago and OMG...they were the meatyist we've ever had and only 3.69 per lb. We usually buy them at CostCo or when on sale at our local market but no more...I will wait for Aldi's to carry them from now on!!!

The purchase is before Payroll taxes. Since we are beach people, the savings adds up.

We must have conflicting information. My wife called the provider and they said spf of 15 and NO script is needed. We made the purchases, sent in receipts, then we received a request from them to submit a picture of the products we purchased. I will google and post support, gotta run to a meeting

Heres my sun screen tip of the day. You know how cold it is when you put it on first thing in the morning? I sure do and hate it so I put it in the sink and soak it in hot water shaking it up time to time while Im having my coffee. No more cold, a nice comfy warm lotion.

I just put the lotion while in the sun, I never notice a cool spray, but now I will cause u said it, lol
