I can't answer your question except to say get an email confirmation
for your rental. Also consider getting Amex car coverage for around
$50 which covers if your car is stolen - worth every penny of it.

You also might contact Avis nationally headquarter website to
verify this is a legit site/offer.

This is not a scam. I just rented after reading this forum for a total of ten (10) days for $61.25 US dollars. After I printed the confirmation, I called their toll free phone number and gave them my conformation number just to confirm the price. According to Avis - I am locked into that rate!!!

This is a great deal! Jump on this rate now before they discover the mistake. I am even picking up the vehicle directly at the airport.

The GRAND TOTAL with taxes and surcharges is $135.45 for ten days.

Thank you Ladyg2u for the information :)

SEE IF YOUR DATES ARE FLEXIBLE!

When I first tried earlier around 7 pm, my first set of dates came up full price. I put in a day later for 7 nights instead of 8 and it came up with a $35 compact or $57.50 mini-van.

FWIW, I have only seen those two rates for compact or mini-van. <<-- nothing in between...

After we booked I walked away from the computer and dh adjusted the reservation and picked up an additional 3 days.

Andrea J.

entered our dates jan 21 - feb 4 and the prices were higher (but of course hahaha)

will stick with our reservation with hans (tropic) for $350 for the 2 weeks.

Okay here is another quirk...

I just put in our "sale" dates for Paseo Harencia pick up and came up with the cheapest vehicle $140+ tax, no bargain.

I went back and modified it for pick up at their main office Oranjestad (Schotlandstraat) and voilà, the $35 compact or $57.50 mini-van prices both came up.

It will be their location at the airport. I am not sure if you have been to the island previously. When you walk outside the front door of the airport terminal you will walk across a 2 small roadways and there are a line of offices directly in front of you.

I am picking my rental up at the airport. It was only a few dollors more than Schotlandstraat. The only difference in price was the airport pick-up fee and in my case, that was an extra 11% of my rental price of $61.25 for ten days.

The difference in the price will pay for the cab ride that you must take from the airport to the Schotlandstraat.

I have given this some thought as well.

The cars are sitting on their lot collecting dust if they are not rented. Avis is not taking in a single dollar to recoup their cost of purchasing the cars, or making the payments, if they are leased vehicles- not sure how that works with international franchises.

Think of it like Spirit airlines flying their airplanes with seats sold at $8 and $9 each. At least they are filling the planes. In Avis' case atleast they are taking in "some" money for their rentals. Better than having the car sit unused.

Supply and demand- capitalism at it's best. :D

Randi

I have a comfirmation too but have you ever gone to a car rental place and they said "sorry, your vehicle is not here?" That is what I am afraid of and they will replace it with some crappy vehicle.

Well, let's see what others have to say after they use this place. I don't want the "little" guy to go out of business but who can refuse a good deal?

I believe as long as you carry a copy of your confirmation you will be fine AVIS has to honor that reservation. I did notice they only have a few cars at a lesser price the regular vehicles go for the regular rate so if you are in a group one or two people will get an inexpensive car everyone else will pay.

Spirit also makes a lot of money on the add-on sales. On-board food and beverages, baggage fees and I believe you can book hotels and cars on their site as well.

Glad to join everybody here. I've been a lurker for some time now but this Avis post got me active. Going in June with another family and we hadn't rented any cars yet. We were able to get with taxes and insurance two Suzuki Gran Vittara SUV's for $126 each for the week thanks to this post. When I rented them the only deals I found were using the General Aviation location. There were two Gen Aviation listings in there and one said not open but the other one accepted it. The only deal was on this SUV and boy what a deal it was.
I'll anxiously wait to hear what sort of response the folks on here who emailed Avis about their reservation get. I was just now surfing through some other past posts and saw where Aruba Lisa listed the addresses for Avis and see that General Aviation is different from the airport. There is no shuttle so how do we get there ? Anyone else use the General Aviation code on their reservation ? The addresses showed as follows:

General Aviation - A9U
Cas Paloma #75, Simeon Antonio, Aruba
(297) 583-5295
Sun-Sat 08:00AM-12:00AM

Reina Beatrix Airport - AUA
Wayaca Zin, Simeon Antonio, Aruba
(297) 582-5496
Sun-Sat 06:30AM-10:30PM

Can't wait for our first trip. I'm sure we will have many more questions before departure !

Andrea J.

you will have to take a taxi there to that location.
i think, and i may be wrong............but i think that location is not too far freo the airport. pretty close actually!

there are plenty of taxis.

it is great that the avis deals are making our lives a bit easier and helping us save a few bucks

These are really some crazy rates. I just rented a MiniVan from the Schotlandstraat office for a little over $100 for a week. I also rented a KIA Grand Vitara for about $88 from "General Aviation". Not sure how close that is? Anybody ever rent there. I prefer the SUV.

Oh, I guess I could also complain about the rental car companies - Avis and National. That was a fiasco. When we got there Avis said they didnt have a minivan which we reserved. The also didnt have any cars!!! THey referred us to another upstart company. Well the car was a bomb!! It also had "A" license plates. Usually tourist rental cars have "V" for visitor. We were convinced that they guy was renting his personal car. Also, Avis didnt have any infant seats that they had promised us.
Still smiling from Aruba!
Vicky

This is from another thread, but I am concerned that when we show up at Avis they won't have my van too??? I called yesterday directly to Avis in Aruba. Still waiting for the manager to call or email me back. He said he has the discretion on pricing but didn't have a computer at his desk to go into my reservation(s). First girl said it was a mistake?? The Avis Aruba site is down but when I go into the Avis Canada website and put in Aruba, I still get the same rates.

I will keep you all posted.

I am still waiting for my email from Avis in Aruba. I spoke with someone in customer service (Avis head office). She said that they must honour the price and if they do not then they can "try" and compensate later. When asked what can we do if they say there is no van? Answer= NOTHING! That is what I am afraid of.... then go try and find a van at Xmas time!

Hi Folks,
Just want to share our experience with Avis. We arrived in Aruba April 3. Had were quoted $600. because we needed a minivan, but when we got there they told us that had none. They didnt even have cars. Sent us to an offsite place - Smart Rent - which gave us a really beat up, high mileage car which did not feel safe. THe car didnt even have "V" license plates for Visitors - it had A plate - for residents. We brought it back the next day and got a car from Avis, when they finally got one in.
I dont know if there is much you can do to avoid this, unfortunately. YOu are at the mercy of the car rental companies. It's a shame.

Hello,

We apologize for the inconvenience caused, we can not confirm these reservations. While maintaining our rates ,there were some mistakes and you could made reservation on it. These prices do not exsist, we can not rent a van for $10. per day.So all these reservations will be cancelled by Avis Aruba. If you want I can confirm reservations for these periods you need a car. Booking now you will have the best rate for high season.

I have just spoken with an Avis Customer service representative. They are investigating this whole thing.
What she did tell me was if you booked on the Avis Aruba website and you are not a resident of Aruba, they will be able to NOT honour your reservation. If you booked under Avis.com (US) or Avis.ca (Canada), they maybe.......
You are supposed to book where you reside.

My question is, even if they do "honour" the reservation, what is stopping this location to say they are out of cars when we arrive?

dear ms pourier

hi, my name is andrea james and i am the forum moderator for the ATA (community forum website)

i invite you to visit the thread that was begun as "does avis have a scam?" i changed the title as the scam title was very inappropriate

i too have made a reservation, have a confirmation and got an economy sized car for $154.03 for 2 weeks jan 21- feb 4

i made my reservation online

many many folks on the government sponsored ATA site have made their reservations thru avis site

as a representative of the ATA and the moderator of the goverment sponsored tourism site, i certainly hope and expect that you will be forthcoming to me and the members of our forum......your customers.

please let us know what the real deal is

folks are now screaming scam bait and switch and are talking about taking further actions
please please please reply to this email and tell me what is happening with the great pricing that we got thru the avis site.

please click the link and read the threads

all of us that received our confirmations will be quite distressed if we find that avis in aruba does not honor the confirmations.

Andrea, that is fantastic!

Arubalisa, Avis Canada told me the same thing, originally, that they have to honour the contract but WHAT DO WE DO IF WE SHOW UP AND THEY SAY, SORRY NO CARS? We can have confirmations from here to tomorrow but then what?

The Avis customer service person I spoke to told me that unless I get something in writing denying that price they could not get involved. Well today they got involved and I am awaiting their response!

I also have the managers email address at Avis and he gave me his person gmail address. Do I give that out???

I'm not familiar with Aruban law but US companies are not required to honor prices that are mis-prints in newspapers or on websites. If the prices were the result of an inadvertent error, there should be no expectation of getting that rate. Then again, if there is a problem, they should be contacting everyone immediately in order to resolve any problems.

04-27-2009, 09:46 AM
Don't think Aruban law has anything like consumer protection laws. Had been
shot down many times over the years about "advertised" or even the price on an item only for them to say - no that price is wrong and they don't honor it....

We went through the same price thing last year only with Alamo. We booked 2 weeks car rental in Aruba on the Alamo website for $89 per week...I even called Alamo twhiole still in the states to be certain...they said all was good. I had the Alamo confirmation in my hand when we went to pick up the car at the airport after we flew in and they would not acknowledge that price. They said someone made a mistake putting the prices on their website and they would not give us the price we got confirmed for even though I showed them the confirmation and told them that I even double checked with a call to Alamo while still in the states. They said that was a stateside problem and we can complain to Alamo when we get home. Big deal. We went next door to Thrifty and paid even less than what Alamo wanted to charge me at the counter in Aruba. Will never book with Alamo again no matter where and no matter what the rate. They were even very nasty.
If anyone has booked at an unbelieveable rate better back it up with something else because they will not give you the cheaper rate once you get to Aruba no matter what. This seems to be a little scam going on with the rental companys.

Well I finally spoke with a supervisor and was "officially" told that Avis could not honour the reservation. An "investigation" is being put forth on this matter. I told the supervisor that numerous people have reservations and have not been informed that their reservation is null and void. He could not comment!

I asked how could a large organization basically wipe their hands of the situation by saying that Avis Aruba is an international company and not the same owner as the North American Avis. I told the supervisor then when renting a vehicle from Aruba we should be directed to rent directly from the Avis Aruba and they should not get involved at all, especially when their agents continually tell customers not too worry as confirmations will be honoured!!

Ladyg2u, you can take taxi's and buses, no problem. If you are situated in the high rise district a lot of restaurants are within walking distance. However, some of the other good places are taxi only. Good luck!!

Only because we emailed Aruba. AND they took the liberty of re-booking for us! at a MUCH MUCH higher price. Needless to say we cancelled. ;)

Okay, in the interest of the forum and Aruba research ;), I have decide to call General Aviation in Aruba directly and just ask for a price for our dates and see how it matches up to their Avis Aruba website. The Avis US & Avis Aruba website prices match, but would rather hear it straight from "the horse's mouth at this point".

My suggestion is this:
To make sure Aruba Avis is dealt with properly we need to make Avis International aware of the situation. Call and ask for customer service and ask them to enquire if this is a legitimate confirmation. If the answer is no, ask them why you were not informed as they have your email address. Then lodge a "complaint" which will generate an internal investigation. Make sure they don't just look at the confirmation number and say "yes", tell them there has been some issues with reservations with this Avis outlet.

You probably won't get anything more than the email confirmation which we all recieved. Supposedly, we are/were supposed to be contacted that our reservations were done in error and cancelled. That is what Lidia said see my posting farther down (way farther) and when I called customer service they said that the confirmation would not be honoured.

My issue is that we should have been contacted and by not doing as such, it seems like there is some sort of scam going on. Once you arrive at Avis, they undoubtably will tell you that the price of the car is more expensive. You will find out at pick up, otherwise where are the emails notifying us of the correct amount????

Second: they should be contacting the customers about the contracts where the amounts are wrong. I am a Avis First member (ya, I rent a lot of cars) through my traveling occupation. Customer service told me to fax in my confirmation # with attention to a case number they gave me that noted my complaints. They rebooked me at at price of $215 for the week and will turn my complaint and fax to a manager in the morning. I dont know what will happen, but Only a few days til I leave. Worse case scenerio, I will not rent with avis and taxi to my destination. (Marriott surf club) I will keep everyone informed what happens the next few days. Wish me luck. ITS CRUNCH TIME!

My dh received a similar explanation today. Basically go pickup the vehicle, pay what ever they charge you and then contact us [Avis US]after you turn the vehicle in. We have decided that for the possibility of having to pay $600+ vs. $260, we are just not willing to take that kind of chance.

Avis Rental Update:

Upon our arrival in Aruba, we walked over to Avis across from the airport. I presented my rental confirmation for an Suv for ten days with the total price being $131.00 including all taxes and fees. I was first told from the Avis rep that they would not honor my reservation because I was given the wrong price. She told me that I would have to pay over $540.00 for the same vehicle for the same time frame. (I smiled when she told me that).

After I produced two (2) emails from both Avis managers (Nixon & Lidia) she didn't know what to say. She had to call both managers to verify my email conformations. After a rather short telephone conversation with both managers, she was told to give me the Suv for my quoted price of $131.00.

Since the vehicle I rented was at General Aviation, we were driven to that location by her co-worker. Once we arrived at General Aviation, we were presented the vehicle, a 2008 Kia Sorrento Suv with only 425km on the odometer. I filled out the required paperwork, which I checked very carefully and everything was in order.

The overall experience was better than I expected. I thought for sure, that I would not get the vehicle. It took a little more than one hour from the time of our arrival at the airport Avis, to us taken possession of the vehicle at General Aviation.

From my experience today with Avis, make sure that you have the reservation verified by at least one of the above listed managers and get that verification in writing via email.

Once you get there and you do have the email verification, stick to your guns if someone tries to tell you that there is no way they could rent the vehicle at that price. It worked for me!

I will post updates on Aruba in the next few days. Off to dinner now and a few bottles of wine:)

Regards,
David

Well I guess I am the only one who got an email from Lidia saying my reservation was cancelled??

What I would do is keep a reservation for another car for a few days later so if you need to cancel you will give the other operater a day or two advance notice. If Avis doesn't honour your confirmation then say good bye, walk out knowing you have another reservation. The worst that will happen is you take a taxi to the hotel and pick up another car the following day.

I am not sure what you mean by the above?

I think they did not believe that this many people would have caught on to the price error that they could have fixed it and we would have the old rates .

good news lidia emailed me and stated my rate would be honored.
step 1. call customer service ask for an email confirmation once you have
the rate send lidia a note stating that she hopes this will be honored.

if step 1 & 2 fails handle it exactly as Dave did.

this is not guareented but with everyone sticking together we can get the rate that was posted.

20 days and a wake Up b4 I am in Aruba:cool:

Well the most hilarious thing happened today. I got two $25 gift certificate from Avis in Tulsa, Oklahoma (remember I live in Canada) from a Director of avis Worldwide Customer Service. They sent it because I lodged a complaint. They sent it "allowing us to demonstrate the true quality of our WE TRY HARDER spirit." They have to be kidding:doh:!

When you turn over the cerificates, you have the terms on the back
-can only us it is the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Australia and New Zealand NO ARUBA!!

Keep you posted.................

Regards,
David

David,
How did you get email verifications from Nixon and Lidia?? Did you book online with Aruba Avis or did you contact them directly?

Please advise as I just emailed Lidia?
Thanks!

ok, latest update is as follows:

Spoke with a supervisor of Customer Service and he said that they can not NOT honour my confirmation. He said that the confirmation must stand. He is going to do some further investigation and will advise me. I sent him the email exchanges for his review.

I will keep you all informed........

BTW, Lidia did email me back (see one of my earlier postings as I put her response on the BB) and told me that the reservation was canceled but it actually has not been canceled.

I rented the Suv via the regular Avis website. I emailed both Nixon and Lidia to confirm my reservation and the price. They both responded back to me within a few days stating that my reservation was confirmed and my price would be honored.

Can anyone share if they have picked up yet at General Aviation? was there a shuttle? How inconvenient was it to pick up there? Also, what are the email addresses to send to to confirm pickup and prices?

We just got back from Aruba last night and we miss being there already.

We returned our rented SUV back to the airport Avis (We picked up the vehicle at General Aviation). We encountered no problems. I was presented the bill for $131.00 for a rental for ten days. The price included all taxes and fees.

No complaints from me regarding Avis...

David

I extremely pleased that someone was able to get Avis to stand by their pricing. Our emails to Lidia Pourier go unanswered.

Glad you are back cant wait to read your trip report.

Good luck. Be persistent with them and they will honor your reservation or maybe I was just lucky...

Regarding a shuttle from the airport Avis to General Aviation - Upon my arrival, I was originally told that I would have to take a taxi at my own cost. I stated to her in a nice firm way, that I was told via email, that I would driven to General Aviation from the Airport.

The bottom line - we were driven to General Aviation by an Avis worker.

Just got off the phone with avis corp (customer service) and have recognized my claim. We were told to fax a copy of the original confirmation (77.51) to them and they would see what they could do. I did have to rebook my avis rental car for the week for $211. Long story short, Sounds like we WON the case and will get refunded the difference 48 hrs after the car is returned. We have a claim number that states this so I think everything is koser. Now I can sit back and relax. 2 days til paridise! Hope everyone else has the same luck!

Sorry it has taken me a little to respond. Home safe and Avis held true on the bargain. It took me a reminder phone call to avis Corp. 72 hrs after we got home, but they did reimburse us $137.

I got to tell you, I have been talking to Lidia via email, and have confirmed my rate of 80+ dollars for an SUV with Pickup at General aviation for a full week. She has been very accommodating even explaining that for an additional 11.11% I am free to drop it off at the airport upon my return. She was also clear that there would be no shuttle, but I've been told that and can accept that.

So far this looks like it will be a great deal for me. Arriving 6/19!

Your reservation will be honoured. When you are in Aruba you have to call us for pick-up, if you are at the hotel.
No shuttles from the airport will be provided.

Lidia

I decided to make another phone call stating that I was aware that the reservations were being honoured and people were told that upcoming reservations would be honoured too. She agreed to honour the two reservations that I have but I told her that I wanted it confirmed via email. I then sent a fresh email with the reservation numbers and low and behold..... they are going to honour the reservation!!!

Should I take off the Don't rent from Avis in my signature yet???

Okay, I will bite. I just emailed Ms. Pourier asking her to reinstate our reservation which she took upon herself to cancel and rebook at the "standard" rate. How long do you all think is a reasonable amount of time to await a response from her?

Randi
05-22-2009, 05:09 PM
She told me she cancelled my reservation on a previous email but when I called the 800 number they told me that it wasn't cancelled. That is when I went into action.

I had to call her directly to get her to respond via email. I used a fresh email so she wouldn't see the "cancelled" part she wrote me. First check to see if your reservation is in fact has been cancelled.

I will PM you the direct number I have for customer service. Use it if your reservation is in fact cancelled and then explain your situation to him.

Thanks Randi. I just now received an email from Ms. Pourier stating that they would reinstate our reservation. I attached the copy of our original confirmation email as well as the email she sent to us cancelling that reservation. A little confusing...she stated one of her colleagues had already responded  but either way she is sending me a new confirmation number on Monday. I also stipulated that the reservation at the original price was for pick up and drop off at Schotlandstrat. Naturally I will keep everyone posted.

What I did was sent an email (after a phone call) with my confirmation number and wanting Lidia to respond in writing that they were going to honour my reservation. That way I know that they will not give me any hassles when I arrive as they specifically told me the reservation is good.

Lidia is very slow in responding to emails.

Yes Danny like Randi said, email them and ask if they intend to honor your reservation. The first time we did that was when they took it upon themselves to cancel the reservation and re-book it at the much higher rate.

If you look waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy back at one of the beginning of this thread, i posted Lidia's email to me telling me that they had canceled my reservation and if I wanted to rebook at the higher rate I could. Well, I didn't rebook and they never canceled my reservation.

You can understand that they are not overly happy with my rental, I have a confirmation for two trips 3 weeks each for only $300!!
