ORANJESTAD — The casino of the Radisson hotel will be closing down per January 31st. The reason for this is that Radisson has not renewed the license contract with the casino’s manager The Millennium Resource Group. “It’s a bitter pill to swallow for the employees with the coming holidays” according to Chairman Rudy Geerman of the trade union Federacion di Trahadornan Arubano (FTA).
The Millennium Resource Group had submitted an application for the dismissal of 91 employees to the Directorate Labor & Research (DAO), Dorothy Laclé van DAO confirms.
The Amigoe had been informed by The Millennium Resource Group that they consider Radisson’s course of action as ‘outrageous’. “How is it possible that they had not informed us sooner that the contract would not be renewed? We will now only have two weeks in February to pack up.” The casino namely has to be cleared for the hotel on February 14th. The casino personnel is ‘apprehensive and depressed’ said a spokesperson of The Millennium Resource Group – who wished to remain nameless. “There are people who have been working with the casino since the beginning (in 2000, red.). The casino had become their second home and they are now forced to leave without being able to do anything about it.”
The Millennium Resource Group presumes that the Radisson hotel wants another company to manage the casino. The Group had therefore instituted legal proceedings against the hotel to enforce a renewal of the contract. The verdict had been given on November 25th and unfavorable for the casino-manager. The hotel had brought up the argument that the casino had not yielded as agreed upon, according to The Millennium Resource Group. “How could we comply with the agreed upon revenues in view of the severe recession” the spokesperson said.
The hotel management of the Radisson did not want to respond to the situation today. The Millennium Resource Group will be holding a meeting with all personnel tomorrow to inform them of their rights. According to Directorate of Labor, an application for dismissal usually takes up to six weeks to two months.

That is too bad. I think that the employees of the Casino were very nice. By the second day most of them new me by name (does that really give away how much time I spent in there :) )

Well unfortunately business is business. If the Radisson wants to change managers then not much can be done. It does stink, but maybe the new manager will come in and hire back most of the old employees!

My two-cents worth: On my visits, the Radison Casino was a favorite place. Courteous employees; clean; and, fortunately, a few nice winnings.

I agree, however, that "business is business" as "Sgrol135" says and, hopefully, if a new management does take over; they will continue the trend set by the previous group.

Just a thought

Is the poker room closing as well?

I would assume so, since it is part of the Casino. I bet that it will not really "close", but will just get a new management.

We will see!

from what I understand the poker room is leased to two brothers who have nothing to do with the hotel or casino, I think

had some good times at the radisson. but you have to admit that they haven't kept pace with the industry's changes - namely, paper based slots and new slot machines.

Dismissal of employees at Radisson casino approved

"ORANJESTAD — The applications for the dismissal of 90 employees of the Radisson casino have been approved by the Directorate of Labor and Research (DAO). Minister Otmar Oduber (AVP) of Tourism, Transport and Labor had confirmed this yesterday during a press conference. The personnel members of the casino will therefore be without employment as of February 2010.

The casino of employer The Millennium Resource Group (TMRG) had to dismiss their employees because its 10-year contract with the Radisson hotel – which expires in January 2010 – will not be renewed. According to Oduber, the casino had not met certain expectations of the renter. “On that basis, the Radisson hotel had decided not to continue with manager TMRG.” Based on a conversation with hotel manager Rob Smith, the Minister announces that the Radisson casino will not be closed for long. However, the Radisson has not decided yet whether they will manage the casino themselves or that a foreign management will be taken on. Just as Rob Smith had mentioned last week, Oduber also states that the dismissed casino co-workers are being encouraged to apply for a job with the new manager. Minister Oduber further explains that the hotel is in possession of the casino permit. “It is up to the hotel to determine to whom they will lend the permit.”

It appeared last week that the current manager TMRG would be managing another casino. The company would check whether the casino personnel from the Radisson could be set to work there.

Has anyone heard any "new" news about the casino mgt changing? I have read on the boards that the 10 year contract with the current management is up as of January 31, 2010 - any news about a new management company coming in to operate? Or how long they anticipate the casino being closed?

I am hoping not long as we used to frequent this casino often and always enjoyed getting a comped dinner at Sunset Grille thanks to all of our losings - better than just losing and getting nothing!

Any information is much appreciated! Thanks!

~ Beth

They received a 2 month extension but I hope The Rad has another management company in the wings. DH plays Texas Hold-Em there and really enjoys the people and management of the room but not so much the rest of the casino. I don't go there (I play mostly 3 card poker at The Alhambra and The Hyatt) as I don't like the way the management handles things. I have NEVER heard of changing a dealer every 5 - 10 minutes just because someone is winning. :(

I just returned from Aruba on Feb.21. I was having dinner at the Raddisson Laguna Buffet and I looked next door---guess what--- the casino is open! When I walked in, I told them that I cut up my player's card because of all the chatter on this Forum about the Jan 31 closure. The guy behind the cage looked at me like I was nuts!---- He said "Does this place look closed?"

has it closed?

Arubalisa

The closing was delayed by the government due to the fact that the workers would be losing their jobs. As far as I understand the casino WILL close eventually, temporarily, for renovations but no date as of yet. In addtion, the reopening date and under which management has not yet been determined.

Aruba Lisa is correct, we just stayed at the Raddison for our Honeymoon and we asked about getting a "players Card " and they said because they were closing on 12/1 that they were not issuing cards. BUt that they would only be closed for 2 days to do inventory and then re-open under new management !

And I won about 300.00 there on the slots !
100.00 on Black Jack !
( and I am a novice at Gambling )

Does anyone know if there will be construction going on at the Radison during the beging to mid Feb 2010? Also, is there any hotel in that area that is for Adults only, or is Bacutti the only one? It's so far away from everything, it's a shame.

No renovations at the Radisson during high season. Renovations to the Aruba Tower will begin in April. During the construction of the Bonaire and Curacao Towers there have not been any complaints of noise or inconvenience.

The Marina tower at the Renaissance in downtown Oranjestad is also adult only.
