    A Tale of Two Eateries

    So... this'll be popular:

I've never been a fan of Mattew's - I've always found the atmosphere like a community theatre production of "Dirty Dancing: The Musical"... the bingo calling/screaming in the background, indifferent kids hanging about the periphery of the giant dining area, sticky tables, drunk patrons at the bar trying to sing along to the 70s music and, charitably, mediocre, camp-like food. But... The Spouse loves the wings and so it's always been a case of "suck it up, buttercup."

On a whim, we went for lunch yesterday. It was pretty deserted as we were there late-ish, 1:30. Placed our order and waited. Forty minutes in and we're still waiting. Out comes the order - The Spouse had requested naked wings with a side of ranch; what he got was (we think) wings coated in buffalo sauce and then double fried. And blue cheese dressing on the side. At this point, we were starving and hot and didn't have the energy to wait around for a correct. I ate my limp Tuna Tataki salad with stale baguette slices in silence but vowing to never return to the scene of the crime.

    So, yeah, done with Matthew's.

But we went to Wihelmina's for dinner and all was right with the world again. I've written them up enough that I don't need to do it again. I did try the Aruban fish cakes for the first time and they were delicious.

    Let's dance, Matthew's Lovers!

We haven’t been to Matthews in years. Our last trip the service wasn’t just bad it was nonexistent. We weren’t even clear on who our server was. When I very politely asked someone who our server was, I got a very rude response. It was so unfortunate as we had always enjoyed it there and obviously we weren’t going back. I have a difficult time forgiving rude behavior!!

Full disclosure, I have tried to get Tom to give them a second chance but he’s not budging.

Last time there we were hot and miserable.

Forgot to add, Paul loved the ribs and I cannot remember what I had.

    The profiteroles were delicious.

Matthew's.... but only because it's a short walk from Manchebo, it's relatively inexpensive and, most importantly,...... DW loves the setting by the ocean......
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the best of men!

We got to Mathew's for happy hour once or twice a week. We avoid Karaoke night and agree with your take on the bar scene. We eat dinner there a couple of times per trip, more so for the view, then the food quality. Fine dining it is not, but we rarely ever go fine dining. Not that we wouldn't enjoy it, we're just not big eaters. I will say that we've never experienced poor service or rude comments from any of the staff. The wife should have that luck at the casinos! We've never had anything to eat there that would rank as a poor experience and agree with CP, it is reasonably priced.

I consider Mathews food equal to Applebee’s when it comes to dinner. Jon swore he had an amazing filet there our first time, the next 2 times we tried to recapture the magic and I was left questioning his judgement. I can tell you it was not tender or amazing. That being said, we love going there for breakfast. The view is great and it’s always been pretty quiet.

I am still not sure how one goes to Wilhemenia and does not order the short ribs. Their short ribs dance through my dreams.
The best trip is the next trip. Anxiously waiting to book something.

Tracey have you had the short ribs at Atardi?? We loved Wilhimenas also but give the edge to Atardi’s.

re Matthews, we went a couple times for ribs years ago and they were good. Anything else we have had has been ok, not great. We will go if we are in the area and just want a casual place on the water, but it’s not an experience we look forward to each trip.

Oh I will have to try those! I really enjoyed Atardi the one visit we had there. Hopefully next year.

We used to go to Matthews every year because it is so close to where we stay at Costa Linda. We stopped going there when Ricardo left and opened his own restaurant at ABC. We decided to go back to Matthews last June for ribs night. It was great. We had great food and service, but we've never had bad service at Matthews. We've only been to Wilhelminas once, a few years ago. Whatever I ordered, I didn't like, so we never went back. We'll probably give it another try at some point. The setting is beautiful.
