Thanks all, we had a nice 1st day for a travel day. All the travel worked well and the kids were all very good on the flight, including our new baby grandson, Dylan, just 5 1/2 months old. It was a pretty relaxing flight and I even got to watch a couple episodes of Stranger Things on my ipad. Our JetBlue flight left on time and we arrived in a short "3 hours and 77 minutes" as the pilot joked. This is a common occurrence on JetBlue flights for the captain to stand up in the front of the plane and speak to the passengers before taking the controls. It puts everyone at ease and gets some laughs and applause from the passengers. The flight actually got in 1/2 hour early.

Getting through immigration was a breeze and the luggage was out quickly once we got to the carousel. Our kini-kini tours driver was waiting as soon as we came out of the baggage claim area and after loading our ton of luggage (see picture Andrea posted above) into the back of the van we were on our way.

The trip to the Marriott Surf Club was very quick, only about 20 minutes. We did see some of the construction, primarily where they are creating a new circle where the 1st light after the downtown area was, but other than that, the roads were fine.

After checking into our villas (we got 2 nice 2 bedroom villas overlooking the Ocean and the Ocean Club on the 10th floor), I immediately went down to the beach. I went to the water sport hut on the surf club beach to inquiry about renting an umbrella from them for the week. This is instead of waiting on lines for reserving Palapas', a frustrating and "hit or miss" proposition. I was able to get the last umbrella for the full week, Monday through next Sunday. These are great because they are right at the water line, in front of the front row of Palapas. With our granddaughters with us, ages 7 and 5, this allows them to play close by while we can keep a close eye on them. To me it is well worth the cost of reserving the umbrellas here.

After our groceries were delivered we went out for an early dinner. We walked down to the Pelican's Nest, but we didn't have reservations and the place was packed, so we left there and went to Smokey Joes. Although the service was slow, the food was good and we had a nice dinner all together. While walking back to the Marriott (and at Smokey Joes for that matter) we couldn't help but notice how crowded it is here this year. This is the 3rd year in a row we have visited here in July and by far, the most crowded its been. I'm sure that the situation in the DR is having some impact on redirecting visitors to Aruba. I will find out more as we meet people during the week here.

After getting the kids back to the rooms and to sleep, I walked over to the Stellaris Casino at the Marriott Hotel. After being down quite a bit early, I made a nice recovery playing Blackjack, including getting Matching 10's on my $5 "first 2 cards equal 20" bet, which paid 19-1 or $95. After playing for a couple of hours I walked away $50 up. I'll take it for the first day! LOL.

Just watching the end of the Sunday night baseball game (now in the 11th inning) before calling it a night. I look forward to a great beach day tomorrow.
Thanks for reading and your interest.

    thanks for sharing!
I have a question about the "umbrella rental"
Is this umbrella rental include chairs/lounges? Is it affiliated with the Surf Club or an independent vendor?
Provides enough shade for the 11 of you?

(wow, sorry that are a lot of questions)

Glad you made it safe and sound and nice first night at the casino. Just wondering if you will share the price of the umbrella rental for the week. We stay at Surf Club two weeks every year and rent a palapa for the first week. I was wondering if the price is comparable, it's sure less of a headache.

It is expensive, $40/ day for the umbrella but for us it’s worth it...
-no getting up at 6am or earlier to get pool seats
    - front row by water just on the waters edge
-come down whenever you want...no 2 hour rule for unoccupied chairs/ palapas
for a week or more you can sometimes work a deal for a free day when reserving for the week.

The chairs are provided by the Surf Club beach attendants just as they do for the palapa sand you need your chair tags.

We’re having a great day at the beach. I will send Andrea some pictures we took from my SIL’s drone later to post.

Sounds like vacation is off to a fabulous start! We really appreciate your reports and with such a crowd along for the ride, you are great to include us in the adventure, Brian!!
I have a question on the umbrella rental if you know. could you have reserved one in advance with the vendor online or by calling? I'm guessing not.
