    August 2020 Trip

I traveled solo with my son, staying nine days at Boardwalk Boutique. Getting there was a hassle with the COVID testing and connections on American. It took me a couple days to calm down and get into the groove of vacation. We ended up having a wonderful time once I got settled. I don’t have the energy to write a trip report but below are some highlights:

    • Our resort was beautiful and super peaceful with the exception of the first weekend. There seemed to be a lot of locals during the first weekend which made the pool more crowded than I expected. This only concerned me because my kid had difficulty social distancing around other kids. We just avoided the pool area while it was busy.
    • I rented a car for the first time. This really opened up the island for us. Certain roundabouts were tricky but otherwise getting around was easy. Having a rental car, we checked out more beaches than usual (Palm, eagle, arashi, malmok and baby beach). Arashi is my new favorite.
    • Other excursions included donkey sanctuary, ostrich farm, California lighthouse (got my workout that day...)
    • Our room had a kitchen, so we mostly ate in but we did eat at Oak and Yemanja. We got takeout from Lionfish snack shack and delivery from Casa Tua. Would recommend all except Oak (expensive for food quality).
    • we took a trip to San Nicolas to walk around and see the murals. Very cool.

We felt safe most of the time. The flights freaked me out the most as mask usage was not being enforced throughout the flight down. I am missing Aruba already and contemplating our next trip for spring break 2021. It’s tempting to try and go back this year given the deals available on travel but getting there just seems really hard. I drove two hours for a quick PCR COVID test and I’m pretty sure insurance is not going to cover the cost. Also, the lack of direct flights out of philly is a deterrent.

Thanks for your trip report. I am glad you had a good time. We are scheduled to fly out of Philly in December on a direct flight and again in January. So far they haven't changed it, but we will deal with it if we have to do so. We were in Aruba in March when everything shut down and we were put on a full flight and no one had a mask.

Thank you for sharing. I'm glad to hear you and your son had a nice trip.

I agree about having a car, it's so cool to get around see different areas. I too, really like Arashi beach.

Where is the lion fish shack?

Thank you so much for your Aruba story.

It is unfortunate that you felt uncomfortable due to other folks not following the rules on the plane.

What kind of airline hassles did you experience ?

The Lionfish Shack gets some rave reviews!!!

    Thank you for sharing.

The Lionfish shack has a Paradera address. It looked like it was in a neighborhood behind someone’s house. It was really good. Fish was light and tasted fresh. Only open on Saturday’s.

No specific airline hassles. It’s just a very long day now. My direct flights were replaced with connections, so we got to the airport around 4:30am and didn’t get to our hotel in Aruba until after 3pm. That is a long time to wear a mask and there was just an added stress level about the virus and traveling with a kid (don’t touch your face or eyes, etc). Overall, I think my kid (10 yrs old) handled the travel pretty well. Getting through Aruba airport was not that bad...maybe an hour getting through it coming in (Friday) and less going out (Sunday).
