    Catching Up:

Wednesday: Road trip and looking for a used car: We decided to take a ride to Baby Beach today and on the way we thought we'd revisit the purchase of a used car again, so we stopped at the Toyota Dealership to see if they had anything of interest. Purchasing a used car from a dealer on the island is a lot different than in the states. In the states the selection is plentiful, but on the island the selection is very limited. We didn't find anything there so we stopped at a used car dealer in Sananeta, but came up empty. Stopped at Baby Beach for an hour or so and then went to Rum Reef for a beverage. Love the view from the new addition. We were getting hungry so we drove over to Kamini's Kitchen for a bite. We split a chicken dish, which was just enough to satisfy the appetite and moved on. It's our third time there and we'll continue to return. Stopped back at the condo to freshen up and then took a little drive around inland and then headed to the light house for sunset. By now we were getting hungry again, so we stopped at Tandoor for dinner. We've been there a number of times now and it's another place that we'll continue to return to. Returned to the condo for a beverage by the pool before calling it a day.

Thursday: Not much today. We went to Super Food after the gym to restock and then sat poolside for awhile. Went to The Kitchen for a late lunch and then took a ride to Garage Central to see what they had for used cars. They seem to have the largest inventory that we've come across so far. We almost purchased one there last trip but passed it up. This trip they didn't really have anything that we wanted, so we moved on. We had a late dinner at the condo and found ourselves poolside again afterwards, lying in a lounge chair. The evenings hear are quiet and peaceful, which is just the way we like it.

Friday: The wife wanted to return some of the purchases she made downtown a couple of weeks ago, so off we went. Walked around a bit and then headed to the Flora store. She found a lamp she liked for the condo so she scooped it up. Went back to the condo to change and the off to Tierra del Soul restaurant for happy hour. There were a lot of people there tonight, so the kitchen had to double the trays of hors d'oeuvres. No casinos the last three days as the wife had to let the lumps subside so we headed back to the condo and called it a day.

thanks for continuing to share your adventures.
more people should visit the FLORA store.
it is a nice place with unique stuff.

    re: the used car.

doing the math, which works best for you folks?
renting for your visits? vs purchasing and then paying for storage, registration and insurance etc...?

I rearranged them and added/deleted a couple in an attempt to group them so they made a little more sense. At some point I'll update the signature page to incorporate and update them too.

Car: We do the math every time we come and as we spend more time on the island owning a car is making more sense. We have a car every day that we are here and this year we plan on being here a total of 70 days. We only get a compact car, as that is all we need to get from A to B, plus with cost of fuel it also makes economic sense. Currently we average about $28.00 a day in rental fees w/taxes, so our expenditure this year is a little over $1900.00. Next year we'll probably be here even longer. We've talked to people that have purchased a reliable used car from a car dealer for $5-6000.00. The way we figure it we'd reach a break even point at some time and still have a car with relatively low mileage. We're getting much closer to the point of purchase.

here in FLA in our community (660 homes) about half are snowbirds.
most of the snowbirds are here from 4 to 6 months.
    many of them "lease cars".
today I was speaking with a woman who is a snowbird from the UP Michigan.
she leases her corolla that she uses here.
3 year lease, no $ down, 10,000 miles allowed a year and her payment is $229 a month (does not include insurance which is $900 p year)
When she did the math, it made more sense for her to lease instead of buy. Then at the end of the 3 years she does it all over again and starts with a new car. this is her 3rd round of leases.
the vehicle sits in her garage here from June 1 thru thanksgiving on a trickle charge.
her car in Minneapolis is owned outright and she says, when that vehicle dies, she will have a lease car there as well.
Do the auto dealerships in aruba offer any leasing programs like that? if they do, I wonder if that could be a good option.

Just wanted to chime in an update our trip ticker. I've been watching airfare trends since we got home from our last trip and today I found a fare that I was comfortable with on A/A for our next trip so I booked it. Nothing better than booking a return to the island while your on the island!

I agree! I booked our return for Jan. because I got a great price, then two days later it dropped $35 a ticket and of course they won't do anything. Still booking it now gives me something to look forward to.

It’s the game we all play. At least I know we booked at what I’d call a fair average price. It’s more likely to go up then down for what we booked at. I can live with it goes down a little. And we used up the last of our travel voucher from last trip, so we’re flying for free again. Hoping for another bump when we fly out next week!
