Smile Recent Return to Aruba April 30th - May 10th

My family and I returned to our timeshare at La Cabana after 8 years and were excited to see our friends again. Some have passed but was great to see the ones that can still come. We have been experiencing other adventures with our 19 year old daughter as it was difficult to take her out of school once she started middle school.

I have to first start off by saying how sad I was to see all the building going on in Aruba. I have been an owner for over 30 years and I so much enjoyed the island when it was quieter and not as crowded. I can't believe how big the new Embassy Suites is going to be and all the new condos built and being built. And the roads were a nightmare as well with construction and roundabouts. We were prepared though thanks to reading the Forum. I'm concerned about where all these people are going to go. Eagle Beach has always been so beautiful and peaceful because of no crowds.

That being said we did have a fabulous time. When we arrived as my hubby and daughter were getting bags I headed to Duty Free for Rum and Vodka. After checking in headed to Super Foods which was crazy crowded. Parking was challenging. I think because it was the day before their Labor Day. We went one other night and it was not bad at all.

Our days were filled with the beach in the AM and then heading up to the pool in time for bingo. Not a winner this trip. Couldn't wait to have my Brown Lady's at Happy Hour. At night we went out to dinner and then hit the Casinos. My daughter couldn't believe you get free drinks. She had so much fun. She was shooting craps with her dad (the pit boss and workers around the table all new her name every night which she got a kick out of) and she played roulette with me. Both winners, not big but we won. My husband was down most of our stay but won it all back by the end of trip. Always nice to come home with money.

One day we drove around the island to reintroduce our daughter to some of the sites as she was a little girl the last time we were here. Went to the Lighthouse, Alto Vista Chapel, Gold Ruins, Natural Bridge area and Baby Beach. Baby Beach has even gotten crowded. There's a restaurant now called Big Mama's with a Flintstone theme (didn't eat there) and you can even rent portable cabanas and lounges (didn't do that either but heard it was $60 for the day). Also took a peek at the Rum Runner with infinity pool. Looks very nice. Wasn't there last time we visited. Also went shopping one day downtown and at the flea markets.

I will post restaurant reviews and other excursions in the proper threads.

All in all we had another memorable vacation and said we would all come back next year (although not looking forward to seeing all the crowds from all the new hotels/condos).

Thanks for sharing your trip! Yes it is becoming quite built up and crowded, but it's still paradise to many of us. Good idea to pass on Big Mama's.

Quite the change in 8 years and thanks for the observations. Glad you enjoyed your visit. I too am amazed at the physical changes to the island over the years...seems like the building never stops!

yes indeed, many changes in 8 years and when the infrastructure stuff is complete (roads and roundabouts) it will be much easier getting around.

my husband says (and has been saying now for 10+ years) that the island is going to capsize towards the west.

thank you for posting you "aruba story"

Where is the embassy suites being buit? I saw construction from the pedestrian road towards Superfoods but had no idea what was being built. Today they started applying tar on the road from Paradise Villas to La Cabana. I was at the beach and the tar was burning my eyes and smelled.
