Mike had a prearranged workcation day so I decided to stay in this morning and play house. Did a load of laundry and straightened out the unit then sat on the terrace to finish reading Kristen Hannah’s book The Nightingale. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys reading historical fiction.
Last night’s dinner at Red Fish was good. Mike had the deep fried red snapper; I had the grilled shrimp. The snapper is a whole fish, head and bones
and all. I’m not a fan. You do get a lot of food for your money. Sides included pan bati, rice, plantains and fries. Definitely a carb overload so we skipped dessert.
Gambled last night at the Hyatt. Did well on the slots. After factoring out what we put in and including what we won the night before we’re now ahead $243. Whooo! We saw a couple from our village who were staying at the Hyatt and while we were chatting a lady sitting behind us hit for $11,500!! Nice for her!!
I skipped the beach today. Had a drop too much sun yesterday- even with 50 sunscreen so I took a break. I’ll be good to go tomorrow.
This evening we hear that the Ocean Club is hosting a champagne and sunset get together on the beach. We’re going to check it out then head to Oak for dinner. Later will probably gamble at the Marriott or the Ritz (or maybe both).
I really like October in Aruba. Not very crowded and the weather has been good. People are Covid conscious and are masking up indoors. There’s hand sanitizer all over and they’re constantly cleaning the common areas. I have also noticed people are not trying to crowd into the elevator. If they see there are 4 people in it they let it go by. It’s been good. MUCH different than when we were here in July. So much less crowded.
Our cab driver last night spoke about all of the overdevelopment happening on the island. He blamed the demise of Oranjestad on all of the malls along Palm Beach. He noted that the electric grid, sewers, roads, and water treatment plants cannot handle this growth. He said the infrastructure is limited and pointed out that this is a small island that can only absorb so much. He also referenced the need for hospitality workers such as housekeeping and gardening staff. Many are coming to Aruba from outside the island but as he observed with more and more hotels being built they’re going to need more people to staff them. And they’re going to need a place to live; hence even more development and a further stress on the system.
I did notice there’s some building going on along Eagle Beach.
On a lighter note, now that Mike has put his workation day behind him we can really fully relax and unwind- starting with the champagne and sunset get together on the beach this evening!
I just downloaded the book. I love historical fiction, especially this time period. Now I have to find time to read it.

    Day 8. ALREADY?
This trip is now going by quickly. Tomorrow we get our Covid tests for our flight home. I’m sure we’re fine but I still feel a bit anxious about testing positive. We did everything by the book so I know there won’t be a problem but until I get the all clear it still is hanging out there. (editorial comment as an aside: I wish us fully vaccinated American citizens could be exempt from the return test. It might even give the anti-vaxers an incentive to get the jab.)

Last night’s dinner at Casa Nonna was good. Mike had the sea bass with artichokes and fennel and I had the pasta in meat sauce. Service was excellent. We worked off dinner by walking down to the Hyatt to try our luck. Seems we no longer have any. Won, then lost, and lost some more so our new tally is minus $300. The way we see it we lost about $45 a day combined. It’s still a pretty cheap date.

We slept in this morning and got to the beach around 12:30. Met my cousin and we pretty much spent the entire day in the beautiful crystal clear aqua blue water. She’s eating at Elements tonight; we have reservations at OceanZ.

it looks like it’s going to be a beautiful sunset this evening…. so gotta go! I’ll check in again tomorrow.

Loving your report! Let us know how you like OceanZ. Heard a lot of good things about it! Good luck with your COVID test! You will be fine but totally understand your concern. We’ve all been there!

    Day 9
Today was test day. We passed and are now allowed to fly home. We had a 10 am appointment at the Stellaris and our results were back by 2:30. We went back to the testing room and they even printed out the results for us. It was all very easy.
We cook breakfast in while here in Aruba but because it was test day and we were up and out anyway we decided to eat at the Malmock Grill at the Ocean Club. Big Mistake. Don’t waste your money there. It was the worst breakfast I have ever eaten. When you need a knife to cut your eggs that were supposed to be cooked over easy…… I posted a review on Trip Advisor.
Since we were hungry in the afternoon we had lunch at Waves at the Stellaris. Mike had the fish sandwich and I had the lobster roll Both were very good.
We stayed late on the beach to enjoy the spectacular sunset. It was another perfect sunny day.
Last night’s dinner at OceanZ was excellent! I love everything about the place. It’s a beautiful restaurant , the owner is warm, friendly and gracious, the staff more than accommodating. The violinist added a nice touch to the ambiance. I had the Coquille San Jacques and the grouper. Delicious! The bread is the best I have had on the island. We will be back for sure! My cousin who ate at Elements last night was very disappointed with her meal there. She said her fish was over cooked and tasteless.
We’re going to try to get into Wacky Wahoos tonight.
I’m leaving out the casino report because I’m a sore loser.

    Day 10
Today was our last day in paradise for 2021 but are taking comfort in knowing we’ll be back in May. Spent a great day beachside, said goodbye to our friends here and passed the extra wine and beer on to my cousin whose friends arrive Saturday. They’re here another week.
We had an excellent dinner at Wacky Wahoos last night. We got there around 8 pm and only had to wait about 10 minutes to get seated. Mike had the red snapper and I had the grouper. Both were good but grouper is my fish of choice.
Lost at the Hyatt casino again and tried our luck at the Stellaris. I’m not going to complain. We have a gambling money envelope that keeps us on track and honest. It’s still pretty full so we did not spend what we budgeted for. We got a message to stop by the players club at the Stellaris where they said they would credit our points towards our bill at the Ocean Club. Good deal.
We’ve packed as far as we can. Just some last minute things go in tomorrow morning. We have a 2 pm flight so we plan to be at the airport around 11 am.
We have no dinner plans for tonight. We’re just going to head down toward the Playa Linda and see what restaurant will take us. I’m hoping there’s room at Chicken and Lobster. If not we’ll go to Smokey Joes.
If I don’t post tomorrow I will on Saturday.
