Smell at Amsterdam Manor

Not so sure it because of the waste treatment facility,I’ve smelled the same bad odor near the footbridge at the ritz hotel and other areas that is because of the stagnant water in the mangroves could be the same thing is happening around the treatment facility especially during the rainy season but it’s just a guess

We would walk from the ritz to the divi every day. The smell as you walk over that bridge by the ritz is horrible and it is every day so i am thinking its the stagnant water. Once you pass that section with the stagnant water, the smell is gone but it is there every single morning

The smell and the flies........ we stayed at AM (loved the property and the beach) one year and would not go back because of the flies..... and where do flies breed....? Yuck

I think the smell from stagnant water is from the salinas across from the Marriott and across from the Ritz, near the skydive landing area......stinky, tolerable, not a poop smell.
The sewer treatment smell is a different smell. (poopy diaper/clear the room kinda smell).

Yuck- Not sure exactly where you are talking about but I hate any smell that resembles crap....Last summer when we were over at the Boardwalk I smelled something near the marsh out front on several days and it smelled like disgusting water....not poop maybe that is what you are talking about. It was the only time I noticed it at the Boardwalk and if it was there on any other visit (assuming we would stay there again which we wont) I would boycott it like the plague as well, lol. If you are talking about the bridge outback by the Ritz heading away from the hotel area we actually got our vows renewed there 3 years ago and did not smell a thing. That was probably the only time we ever went near that area.....I don't like walking that way as I find the sand has tons of rocks and not something I want to walk on with no shoes.

Yes that bridge from the beach onto ritz property. All i know is for 36 days religiously we did that walk and for 36 days there was that smell but only by the bridge and the first couple of cabanas once you cross the bridge onto ritz. As you move away from the bridge that crosses that water, the smell goes away

Some details:

- The plant is 48 years old and was designed to last 50 years.

- Testing has been done on the structure containing the waste. Results were "fatal", the concrete is "practically rotten". Ultrasound tests have shown there are big holes in the concrete which forms a serious and imminent danger to the surrounding area should the concrete give way.

- The plant is not able to keep up with the demand anymore. Only 40% is able to be purified, compared to 90% which it was designed for.

- 8 tons of water pass through the plant on a daily basis.

Side note: Mangroves do certainly smell, but this depends on several factors. I'm not sure which bridge you guys are speaking about near the Ritz, so I can't really say what's up there. We are in our yearly drought season again so unless someone is watering the mangroves or they have another source of water, they shouldn't smell. Mangroves smell when bacteria start breaking up the organic matter. They use oxígen to break it up, but if the oxigene runs out, sulfar is used instead, which then releases the not so nice smell.

Thanks for sharing this information. I'm glad to hear that they plan to address this. Hopefully, they will put the money and resources into finding a real solution. Amsterdam Manor is such a lovely resort, and it's unfair that they have had to endure this, and there is so much building going on, close by. I've often thought that instead of investing so much money into building and expansion, Aruba needs to be addressing this issue, which affects all of the businesses in close proximity to the plant.
